From Karlsruhe to Speyer by car

by Trekki - last update: May 22, 2008

1 - the Autobahns

(1) Take the A5 from Karlsruhe and drive north,

(2) at the so-called "Walldorfer Kreuz" turn into the A6 (which is direction Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, Saarbrücken and Speyer). The A5 (which you should not take) will be signedposted "Frankfurt",

(3) at Hockenheim (where you can see a tiny bit of the Formula 1 galleries to your right), follwo the signs to Speyer and get on the A61,

(4) exit at the next exit, which says Speyer (even if the A61 will also eventually lead to Speyer, but in a huge long circle), drive straight on, until you cross the Rhine,

(5) exit at the first possible exit after the bridge, which says "Speyer, Dom (= cathedral) and Technisches Museum (Technical Museum)"

and then details on the next screenshot and description:

2 - exit highway to the parking place

After you exit from the highway (1), turn right (2) at the traffic light. You will see a small plaza with flags of Speyer's twin cities and see the cathedral in front of you (3) and turn right again. At the end of this tiny road, turn right again (4) and get onto the huge parking place (5).

3 - walk to Trinity Church

Walk to the northwestern part of the parking place (the farthermost one of where you entered), walk up the stairs and turn to the little plaza with the twin city flags and coats of arms.

Turn right here (the big building to your left is part of the Historical Museum).
Walk straight on until you arrive at the cathedral plaza (cathedral to your right).
Turn left into Maximilianstraße - you will see the twon gate in the distance.

As soon as you see a small plaza to your right (on your right is a pastel blue house and the bronze statue of the Jacob pilgrim) turn right and you see the Trinity Church.

Fascinating page on this gorgous city. Loved it all - so ornate and lovely. The museum hides real treasures, but this Roman wine is just too much - what a waste!:) Interesting story of the statues of the Salian kings. A great page!

So many new things to see and do :) Your pictures with the summer blooms around the buildings are lovely :( What a pity I can't get to a Christmas Market for a few years yet!

You have added considerably to this page since my previous visit - and I don't have time to finish now. But this is a page to savour, not to rush: excellent photos and dense with information.

Beautiful city. Reminded me a bit on Gdansk. Funny but we have never heard about Anselm Feuerbach, until now. And, it is so very obvious that you love Speyer :-)
