Album in Progress, Ways to Go Green!
Drive a Hybrid! I do, but this is not my car. I drive a Lexus RX400h. My gas mileage isn't as wonderful as the sticker suggested I would get but keep in mind that driving a hybrid also has less fuel emmissions.
Bring your own grocery bags! I have 7 Trader Joe durable bags I carry in my car. Now, I take my bags into every store. One grocery store in my neighborhood actually gives you credit for each bag you bring in as an incentive to bring in your bags. Trader Joe's will give you a raffle ticket for bringing in a bag for a weekly drawing for a Trader Joe's gift certificate. If I go into a store and forget to bring in my bag, if it's just one or two items, I will tell them I don't need a bag.
Energy efficient light bulbs! You use less electricity and save on your monthly bill. |

Buy a water purifier pitcher! I once bragged about how I recycle my plastic water bottles on a forum about conservation. Giampiero suggested I not buy bottled water and buy a Brita pitcher instead. Yea, I agreed that this was a better solution and that I would get one. I think it's about 6 months later but I did it! I finally bought the pitcher. A replacement filter costs about $6 each if you buy a 3 pack on Amazon. A filter will clean 40 gallons of water which equates to $.15 per gallon when I was spending $1.00 per gallon from the market. My boyfriend commended me on taking the plunge and said he should probably do it too! Often times, we think we are way too busy and don't have time for inconveniences but this really isn't much of an inconvenience. Just have to fill it up with water. Easy enough!

Use less paper bags, baggies, ziplock bags, plastic wrap and/or foil by using reuseable containers. Yes, it takes some small effort to wash your containers afterwards but not only will you save money, you produce less polution to our environment.
Recycle glass, plastic, newspaper, cardboard and aluminum cans! I try to recycle as much as possible. My problem is storing and disposing of it all. I seem to accumulate the stuff quickly. The plastic bottles, glass bottles and aluminum cans are taken at a recycle center at the market. But sometimes, the guy isn't there. Sometimes, the automated machines don't take my wine bottles or won't take the gallon size plastic bottles I have.
The IKEA store will take the cardboard and alkaline batteries but you have to bring it to them.
Some trash services in a particular neighborhoods will provide bins for the recycleables. I think everyone should try to do their part. | | |
