Something I love about Rome is the way the ancient joins with the more recent.
Everywhere one walks in central Rome there is visible evidence of how Roman stones have been re-used, or of what once existed on the site.
The beautiful marbles in S. M. Maggiore and many other churches were taken from the Roman city.
The travertine blocks from the Colosseum helped to construct St. Peter's, and many other buildings.
Roman 'rubble' provided stone for walls everywhere Some Medieval rusticated palaces have gone but bits of them remain visible..
I love this: I love the seamless way the millennia join together to form a tangible timeline. It gives the past a truth and a presence which is nt found on such a large and diverse scale anywhere else.
So I took photos, because the re-use fascinates me........ |

It's going to be hard to focus on work today! I've saved several of your Rome tips to my travel guide.
