"Slovenia to Serbia and Back (Day 8)" Maribor Travelogue by pure1942

Got up at 9.00 and packed up my things. Decided against the caves but instead I’m going to get off in Maribor for a look around before heading on to Graz. Train for Maribor left at 10.20 and would arrive in Maribor at 12.30. Met a Slovenian woman and her English husband on the train who I chatted to for the journey to Maribor. The journey passed quickly and I got off in Maribor to have a look around Slovenia’s second city. The city is very compact and easy to get around. Not a huge amount to see but was nice for a stroll especially through the pedestrian area around Glavni Trg, Grajski Trg and Trg Generala Maistra . The city was very quiet (being Easter Monday) but the weather was nice and dry and passed a couple of hours walking around before grabbing my train on to Graz at 14.20. Left Slovenia behind for the last time at around 14.35 at Spielfeld-StraB.

Piramida Hill - Maribor

Arrived in Graz at around 3.30 and walked down to the hotel which was conveniently located near the River Mur, just behind the strange Kunthaus building. Hotel is basic after staying hostels for the last week and a half it was nice to have a room to myself again. Weather started turning fairly nasty with snow blowing in from the mountains. As I started exploring the city I came across an Irish pub, Flan O’Brien’s and unfortunately that was it for the rest of the day. I met two Irish guys who were living in Graz and they were out for the rest of the day so I joined them for what turned out to be a very late night of drinking. Met some nice people along the way in O’Brien’s, O’ Carolans and The Office bars. Met this German Guy, Dominic, who is from Munich but has the biggest Irish accent. He says he has never been to Ireland or has any family from Ireland but he plays Irish music and can even speak a little Irish and has the Irish Harp tattooed on his arm. Eventually got to bed at about 5.00.
