Celebrating independence day in Salatiga

Our neighbourhood (rukun tetangga) hired a group Ponorogo Reog performers for the festivities around Independence Day 2007 (August 17th). A main character of the performance is the Singo Barong or 'dancer in lion's guise'.

A field 50 m from our house had been cleared for the purpose. The group brings it's own music.

Performers in trance

A special attraction is that some performers get in a trance.

While in trance they may behave like animals ...

... and do queer things like eating raw cassava roots ...

... or playing around with a live snake and biting off its head.

Jaran kepang

Included is a performance of jaran kepang or 'straw horses'.

Boys from the neighbourhood are allowed to ride the lion.
