With the very dry summers here, fire is a constant danger. In the summer of 2003 a very large forest fire ravaged Okanagan Mountain south of Kelowna. It was started by lightening strikes and burned fiercely for several weeks destroying hundreds of homes and tens of thousands of hectares of forest. Also destroyed were many of the historic railway trestles in Myra Canyon. Reconstruction of the trestles is now under way. |
