On the shore of Lake Titicaca. A constant (cold) temperature all year round. And not tidal. |
| | Salar de Uyuni Uyuni has to be the most amazing place on Earth. It is in the high Andes, at about 4200m. It a salt desert, approx. 12000 square kilometres. Not snow, salt! |
| | Uyuni - Isla de Pescadores A rocky outcrop in the middle of the salt desert is home to some pretty impressive cacti, as well as a few birds and other fauna. The cactuses are said to grow at 1 cm per year. Some are 12 m tall, which makes them 1200 years old. |
| | Uyuni sun-up The desert gets really cold at night - down to -10°C or even colder, so you need plenty of clothes first thing. That is the only time to see the geysers and fumaroles - once the air warms up, the steam is no longer visible.
So cold in fact, that the flamingos get frozen into the lake overnight, standing on one leg, and can't start feeding until the ice has melted. |
| | Uyuni - Desert of Siloli - Arbol de Piedra |
| | Uyuni - railway graveyard These wonderful majestic engines are driven out into the desert and their valuable parts removed. But they won't rust away because it never rains there. The air is too dry |
| | Sucre - dinosaur footprints |
| | Potosí - Silver mine This was the city famous for its mountain which the Spanish exploited. In fact the name Potosi is synonymous even today in Spanish with inexhaustible wealth.
Amazingly, dynamite was on sale at various shops, to give to the miners. |
