Local festivals and traditions around the world :-

by Trekki - last update: Apr 16, 2009

It is fascinating how many festivals or festive traditions or traditions in general are similar and still different around the world. Many of our traditions and customs do go way back to partly medieval times or earlier.

What I intend here is a collection of VTers' pages who describe these local traditions and festivals on their pages or in local customs tips.

Although Christmas is over by the time I am writing this, I want to start with Simone's description of Swedish Christmas traditions on her Hedlandet page.

Next to come would be Easter, but there are many more spring festivals or religious festivals held in the different parts of the world.
Let me know if you come across one on a page here or tell me where you have described traditions you have experienced or which are part of your childhood.
Being a lover of Brazil, Mira (@mircaskirca) has described of course many Brazilian customs and celebrations. Very much colourful is the celebration of Semana Santa - Easter in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais:
Easter in Ouro Preto. And musicwise, follow her to São Luís, Maranhão, and attend the festival Tambor de Crioula where Brazil's African roots result in fantastic music and dancing :-)
Yes, I know, it'll get a bit messy here in the local festival album. Mybe one day, when I have more links, I can start organising into "groups".
Robert (@Robertgaz) writes about Balingup Carnival which takes place end of August and is a Medieval fair with tournaments, food and fun :-)
Japan, this fascinating country with the very much diverse culture and traditions - Ursula (@cheesecake17) can tell you all about them :-) I recommend the reading of her Japan local customs because here she describes the Japanese year with all the different festivals. She has many more traditions explained, but Ursula, I need your help - tell me where each is and I'll link them here :-)
And Monina has cute and funny photos and descriptions about Lucban's Pahiyas Festival, a kind of thanksgiving festival :-)

I'm working on it, dear Ingrid. There's a lot of material but hope to have it done by tomorrow. I promise it'll be worth the wait. Thanks for checking and the well wishes. :))
