The Pagoda at the Tidal Basin...

The Japanese Pagoda, carved out of rough stone, was presented as a gift to the City of Washington D.C., by the Mayor of Yokohama.

It was given as a symbol of "the spirit of friendship between the United States of America manifested in the Treaty of Peace, Amity and Commerce signed at Yokohama on March 31, 1854."

The pagoda was dedicated and placed on the Tidal Basin's west bank on April 18, 1958.

Cherry Blossom Festival 03292008..

What can I say, I keep going back.

The colors are same every year, the scenes are same, but I just love it all the same. I have pictures going back several years that I have not been able to upload, so I took some more today. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. April 11, 2008 - the blooms are past the peak now, but two Saturdays turned out to be beautiful days weather-wise and bloom-wise.

During this time of the year, the weather can be capricious, cold and warm, cloudy and clear, windy and calm, etc. For this reason, one should plan to stay in the DC area for a week or longer if possible. There is a lot do indoors as well duirng the day for the entire week.

1976 -

I first came to this magnificent city, not knowing what to expect. I have yet to explore it fully or well , there is so much to look for, even now !

365 days a year , you have indoor attractions - the Smithsonian, National Botanical Gardens, Library of Congress, art galleries.

24 hors a day, you can visit outdoor attractions - the monuments, Newseum, Canadian Embassy, the waterfront,Georgetown, M street, Chinatown.....

The traffic is horrible, luckily we have an excellent metro / commuter train system, so you can get around without a car.

VT has many other excellent pages about Washington, DC, so I aim to skirt around oft-repeated topics. if you have any questions, I will gladly try to find the answer for you.
