My travel pages

by toonsarah - last update: Sep 28, 2009

Fireman's helmet, Karlsruhe
I’ve found it really helpful when visiting other people’s home pages to have an introduction to their VT pages, but my list was getting just too long so I’ve moved it here. If you visit any of my pages please do leave a comment!

Drinks shack near Ocho Rios

2009

I had a great time at the wonderful VT Euromeet weekend, visiting: Cascais, Belém, Lisbon and Sintra. There are also lots of photos of the meeting in some travelogues on the Cascais page.

In March a work trip took me to Bath, one of my favourite English cities, and I took the opportunity to explore again and capture my impressions for VT.

2008

In September we paid a return visit to New York, 26 years after falling in love with the city on our forst long-haul trip together. We also spent a week in New Jersey, staying in the lovely Victorian seaside town of Cape May.

In July Ingrid (aka Trekki) came to England and together we had a lovely day out in the Cotswolds; I've split my tips between Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, just as the Cotswolds themselves are split.

Earlier that same month we spent a weekend in Dorset, visiting the village of Corfe Castle, and the nearby coastline at Lulworth Cove.

At the end of May I was in Karlsruhe for the big Euromeet. There are lots of photos of the meeting on my page, and some tips about the city too. I also have a small page about Speyer - visit it to enjoy with me the guided tour that Ingrid gave us on the Friday.

In February we went to Jamaica, where we stayed first in Ocho Rios and then in Negril. We also spent a day exploring the capital, Kingston.

In Khiva

2007

In November we spent a long weekend in Naples, with visits to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento.

In October I travelled to the pretty Belgian city of Mechelen for work, but managed to fit in some sightseeing - and a few beers!

In July we went to Uzbekistan, an incredible country to visit. As well as an overview of the country, I have written pages about the various cities we went to:
~ the magical city of Khiva
~ my favourite Uzbek city, Bukhara
~ the less-visited town of Nurata (the only page about this town on VT, I think!) and our stay in a yurt in the Kyzyl Kum Desert
~ the awe-inspiring sights in Samarkand
~ the more modern capital of Tashkent, with some hidden gems and a special encounter!

Earlier in 2007 we were in Alkmaar; this is just a small page as we were only here overnight for a football match. Another football trip was to Gent, which was a great discovery: a lovely little city. And on the way back from Gent, we spent a few days in Brussels

View from Spahn's B&B, Sheridan, WY

2006

We went to Palermo for yes, of course a football match, and found another interesting city we wouldn't otherwise have visited. Just outside Palermo, we discovered the stunning cathedral of Monreale

In September we spent 2 weeks touring Wyoming, and I also built pages about some of the most interesting places we visited:
~ Laramie and Lander
~ Grand Teton National Park, with its fantastic mountain scenery
~ Yellowstone National Park
~ Cody, a great little Western town
~ the Big Horn Mountains & Sheridan, with the accommodation "find" of the trip at Spahn’s B&B
~ Devil's Tower, Sundance, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse (in South Dakota)
~ Lusk and Torrington, both excellent places in which to get a sense of the history of this area, especially the pioneer trails
~ Cheyenne, the attractive state capital

Earlier in the summer we spent a weekend in Oslo; another football trip of course!

Floating Islands, Lake Titicaca

2005

In November we made the first trip that I documented properly for VT, Peru, and as with Wyoming I also did some separate pages about the most interesting destinations:
~ Arequipa, a good place in which to adjust to altitude
~ the Colca Canyon, where we were lucky enough to see condors
~ Lake Titicaca, with the intriguing Floating Islands
~ Cusco and the Sacred Valley
~ Machu Picchu, one of the world’s “must see” destinations

All my trips before summer 2005 have been added to VT retrospectively rather than being recorded as I travelled. I've found to my frustration that many past trips are hard to document here, either because my photos pre-date the digital era, or because my memory of what we saw and did is too hazy - and usually for both of these reasons! Nevertheless I'm determined to fill in as many of the gaps as I can. Some of the pages below have benefited from these recent efforts, others are yet to be updated, and many more holidays are waiting to be tackled, so watch this space!

In March we went to Cuba. We were keen to visit before Fidel Castro dies and the place changes forever. This page needs some work but I think gives a reasonable flavour of our visit.

Gentoo penguin

2004

In July 2004 we went to Namibia. It was a fantastic country to visit, and one of my favourite holidays ever! It was still fresh in my mind when I joined VT so I hope I’ve done it justice here.

2003

In October 2003 we had a “cheap and cheerful” trip to Goa.

Before that though, in February, we had another definite contender for best holiday ever: Antarctica. I feel privileged to have visited here.

I also have a little page about Ushuaia, the Argentine town that acts as the departure port for cruises to the Antarctic.

~~~oOo~~~
Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
pre-2003
After this point it gets very patchy but I have filled in a few of the gaps and will be working on pages regularly, so do check back from time to time to see what’s new!
2002
Over 30 years after that memorable school trip to Canada I was back again: we spent our July holiday touring mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island. I've also done a separate page about the little town of Tofino, one of our favourite places on that trip.
~~~oOo~~~

2001
Off to Brazil in October for our first visit to South America. We visited:
~ Rio de Janeiro
~ Parati
~ Iguaçu
~ Manaus
~ the Amazonian rainforest
~ Salvador da Bahia,
and ended with a beach stay at
~ Praia do Forte.

~~~oOo~~~
2000
In July we went on a driving trip, one of our favourite types of holiday, through North Carolina and Virginia. I’ve built this page largely from memory, with the help of an old diary and scrapbook, and some internet research, and also separate ones about the peaceful barrier island of Ocracoke
and the fascinating history of Colonial Williamsburg.
~~~oOo~~~

1999
We travelled to Tanzania for a week on safari in the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park, and also spent a week on Zanzibar.

~~~oOo~~~
Newcastle and the Tyne from Baltic Gallery
REGULARLY UPDATED
I also have a relatively modest page about England, focusing on local customs and the attractions in the different regions of the country, a growing one about my home city of London, and a pretty comprehensive one about Newcastle upon Tyne, Chris’s home town, which we visit a lot and which I’ve grown to love. All of these pages are updated regularly.
 I'm a sucker for tradition but this is one case, I'll take the modern. ;) Sorry to read of your longer than expected heal time, Sarah. Get well sooner than they say.
