The Byzantine church (11th - 12th century) stands next to some lovely 4th-century mosaics in the ruins of a huge basilica and episcopal palace. They are only partially excavated, but well worth exploring.

One of the columns is supposed to be where St Paul was tied up and whipped, but this is most probably not in the least bit true. What is true, oddly, is that the Danish King Erik Ejegod (1095 - 1103) was buried here after dying on his way to the Holy Land.

Be warned: the site is particularly badly-signed, and it is not at all clear where you can and cannot walk. I only discovered this after I'd explored and taken my photos, when I was aggressively and very unpleasantly shouted at by some local Brit ex-pats. I saw no signs as I walked in (there are a few tiny ones only), so the error I made (and any photos I should not have taken) was entirely unintentional.
