For those of you Euromeet 2008 attendees who are in the area already Friday (May 30) and would like to do some sightseeing, I would like to offer a tour through Speyer.
Speyer is located approx. 40 km northwest of Karlsruhe, on the other side of river Rhine and quite famous for its more than 2000 years of history and had played a major role during Reformation. It has a lot to offer, such as the Imperial Cathedral, many churches (one of them with 36 stained glass windows), cute and picturesque streets with old town flair, two famous museums, nice shops and excellent places to grab typical Palatine food. Many poets describe(d) it as “where Palatine starts to become Italy” – for the mild climate and the partly mediterrean flora and fauna.
For further information, please see here: Speyer’s website: Speyer’s website in German Speyer’s website in English (unfortunately not as extented as the German one):
I highly recommend to print out the excellent city map, although I’ll prepare some printouts: Speyer city map (and I’ll post the meaning of letters and numbers later). (Bahnhof = train station) |
Suggestion for sightseeing in Speyer My suggestion for a tour would be: * meeting at 11.00/11:15 at the main entrance gate of the Cathedral, in case some will go by car, * visit of Dreifaltigkeitskirche (thanks to the nice priestess, who will give us a tour and open the door for us), * visit of the Imperial Cathedral and the crypt (if of interest, I can try and organise a guided tour to the secret insides like walking on top of the central nave – but I would need to know how many we would be first, as this depends on the amount of people), * walk west through the picturesque side streets north of Speyer’s main street, * walk on top of Altpörtel for a magnificent view of the city and her surroundings, * visit of Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) with 36 stained glass windows, * walk back to the cathedral along Maximilianstraße, * side trip to the Mikwe, an old Jewish ritual bath, * visit of one of the two museums: Historical Museum of Palatine: Historical Museum – German website, Historical Museum – English website (or my page here, details in the local customs section) or Technical Museum: Technical Museum – German website Technical Museum – English website or on Michael’s (@globetrott) VT page |
Transport to and from Speyer I am trying to squeeze all of us into cars. As of today (May 1st), we have 5 cars and over 20 VTers who have registered.
On the other hand, there is a direct train: leaving Karlsruhe at 10:08 and arriving in Speyer at 10:46 without changing trains. We would not be stucked in traffic and would "be together" = no one can get lost. Important info for the train option: we can buy a ticket for 26 Euro, valid for the whole day and covering 5 persons. This is a bit more than 5 Euro per person. Otherwise, one single ticket would cost 9,90 Euro.
Getting back to Karlsruhe: leaving Speyer at 15:13, arriving in KA at 15:52 (change trains 0x), leaving Speyer at 15:31, arriving in KA at 16:32 (change trains 2x), leaving Speyer at 15:56, arriving in KA at 16:54 (change trains 2x), leaving Speyer at 16:02, arriving in KA at 17:34 (change trains 0x), leaving Speyer at 16:24, arriving in KA at 17:48 (change trains 1x), leaving Speyer at 16:26, arriving in KA at 18:00 (change trains 0x), leaving Speyer at 16:31, arriving in KA at 17:32 (change trains 2x), leaving Speyer at 16:56, arriving in KA at 17:54 (change trains 2x).
Maybe a wise idea to think about packing the train full of VTers? |
Entrance fees and possible other expenses soon to come.
Genereally: pensioners: bring your IDs, the museums give discount.
Entrance fees: Historical Museum of the Palatine: * 4 € p.p. for the normal exhibition; * 8 or 9 € for the special exhibition Samurai; discounts: 3 € for students, pensioners, disabled, kids up to 17 years (bring IDs) and for groups bigger than 15 persons;
Imperial Cathedral - crypt: entrance into the Imperial Cathedral is free of charge. However, entrance to the crypt is 2 € per person. I highly recommend to visit the crypt.
Technical Museum: * 12,50 € for adults (and 11,50 € for a group of minimum 20 people), NO reduction for retired but reduction ( fee: 10,50 €) for severely handicapped.
Trinity Church: There is no entrance fee, but I would like to suggest that we collect and donate to the church, as the priestess takes her time to open the church for us and guide us through it. |

evaanna Fri Apr 3, 2009 13:01 UTC Fascinating page on this gorgous city. Loved it all - so ornate and lovely. The museum hides real treasures, but this Roman wine is just too much - what a waste!:) Interesting story of the statues of the Salian kings. A great page! | scottishvisitor Wed Jan 21, 2009 20:51 UTC So many new things to see and do :) Your pictures with the summer blooms around the buildings are lovely :( What a pity I can't get to a Christmas Market for a few years yet! | tiabunna Sun Jan 11, 2009 12:02 UTC You have added considerably to this page since my previous visit - and I don't have time to finish now. But this is a page to savour, not to rush: excellent photos and dense with information. | Zvrlj Sat Jan 10, 2009 16:52 UTC Beautiful city. Reminded me a bit on Gdansk. Funny but we have never heard about Anselm Feuerbach, until now. And, it is so very obvious that you love Speyer :-) |
