KANDY ESALA PERAHERA | Caparisoned Elephants, Kandy Perahera |
Finally, in 2005, on my 10th visit to the Land of Serendipity, I experienced the fabulous annual 10-day festival, which celebrates the Tooth Relic of Buddha. I love elephants, so watching nearly 200 of them, caparisoned, parading within touching distance was the ultimate!! They are so well behaved and the entire night was a spectacle of the many groups working together in high precision, from the drummers, various dancers, fire branders, stilt walkers and those who cleaned up behind the elephants and carried water for the performers. |
| | KANDY ESALA PERAHERA contd. Also very impressive are all the Village Chiefs from around the country, who participate in the 10-night parade. |
NOVEMBER 2007 TRIP My trip this year was only a month's duration and was mostly spent in and around Colombo, because mainly I was there to administer my 'Education Program' (which is dedicated to my Mother's memory), and add several girls to the program.
I did get up to Kandy and Anuradhapura for a few days, though, to visit some of my special friends.
But most of my photos this time are the new babies added to a friends' family, as well as my original 'adopted' family-----in fact, TWO of my girls are now mothers, which I guess makes me a GRANDMOTHER BY PROXY! (I have no children of my own, just a step-son.) | | |
