Sun, Clouds & More from My Windows

Clouds and Sun over Greenwich Village Spring 07
With a wide-open view from my apartment windows sun and clouds become welcome for the patterns they create.

“You must not blame me if I do talk to the clouds.”
— Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
“God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.”
— Martin Luther quotes (1483-1546)

“Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.”
— Rabindranath Tagore (Indian Poet, Playwright and Essayist, Won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, 1861-1941)
“Be thou the rainbow in the storms of life. The evening beam that smiles the clouds away, and tints tomorrow with prophetic ray.”
— Lord Byron quotes (1788-1824)

Water Tower, 40 Fifth Ave., July 2007
An elegant apartment house rises at 40 Fifth Avenue. This Greenwich Village section of lower Fifth Avenue is known as the Gold Coast. This is a prewar building, and that war is always understood to be the Second World War. The water tank, seen from our south-facing window, is encased in an elaborate brick and limestone tower, decorated with peaked pediments, urns and topped by a domed lantern.
Officially known as the First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York, this Neo-Gothic building stands on lower Fifth Avenue’s Gold Coast, between West 12th and West 11th Streets. The building was dedicated in 1846; but the congregation dates from 1716 and began life where New York City did, further south on Wall Street.

One of the most delightful sights seen from our windows is the clock tower of the 1876 Jefferson Market Library.

We do not even need a clock in the house; we can easily glance out the window for the time. And I do!

Built in the Victorian Gothic style, originally the Jefferson Market Library was the Jefferson Market Courthouse. In the mid-1970s it became a branch of the New York Public Library.

Bonjour et Aloha! How are things in Manhattan? All my friends moved, so now I don't know.

Von, my brother lives right across the street from the Biltmore and we often lunch there. It is indeed nice! Glad you enjoyed your stay in South Florida. Homer

Hello from South Jersey...! Very nice home page. Rome is a fantastic city! I have enjoyed all my European trips. The economy has been keeping us stateside lately. Wish I had my own wings so I could fly over myself...haha!
