With a wide-open view from my apartment windows sun and clouds become welcome for the patterns they create. |

| Water Tower, 40 Fifth Ave., July 2007 |
| | An elegant apartment house rises at 40 Fifth Avenue. This Greenwich Village section of lower Fifth Avenue is known as the Gold Coast. This is a prewar building, and that war is always understood to be the Second World War. The water tank, seen from our south-facing window, is encased in an elaborate brick and limestone tower, decorated with peaked pediments, urns and topped by a domed lantern. |
Officially known as the First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York, this Neo-Gothic building stands on lower Fifth Avenue’s Gold Coast, between West 12th and West 11th Streets. The building was dedicated in 1846; but the congregation dates from 1716 and began life where New York City did, further south on Wall Street. | | | First Presbyterian Church Tower, July 2007 |

| | One of the most delightful sights seen from our windows is the clock tower of the 1876 Jefferson Market Library.
We do not even need a clock in the house; we can easily glance out the window for the time. And I do!
Built in the Victorian Gothic style, originally the Jefferson Market Library was the Jefferson Market Courthouse. In the mid-1970s it became a branch of the New York Public Library. |
