India was a great centre of learning , culture and business many hundreds of years ago. After it was repeatedly plundered by invaders for centuries , it saw an erosion in it's importance on the world stage.Things are once again looking up and the country is increasingly making it's presence felt in world affairs.

This very progress has a flip side.The environment is taking a severe knock.Ground water is getting scarce as cities become concrete jungles.More private automobiles mean more consumption of gasoline - 80 percent of which is imported from the gulf region.This raises questions about atmospheric pollution and energy security . Food production is not keeping pace with the increasing needs of the massive population of 1.10 billion people.Food security is a major concern as crops are being diverted for the manufacture of alternate fuels.
As more Indians start enjoying a better lifestyle like their counterparts in China and other developing nations , one earth will not be enough to sustain life . The consequences are truly grim.
