Yungtham -the valley of flowers

by mantru - last update: Feb 22, 2008

Next day was a welcome one as the sunlight came directly to our rooms and greeted us goodmorning.....we had our morning tea and breakfast of bread and butter i has noodles......we started towards Yungtham around 8 am...the drive through the winding road was good the scenery was awesome the reds (Different hue of crimson),yellow, orange ,green of autumn was mesmerizing...i love the colour of autumn it gives me alot of happiness as the nature bursts itself with full fury for the last time before the dull winter starts....the woods covered with mosses the road lined with rhododrandons...i was just imagining how it will look in spring have heard alot about Yungtham in spring.....but due to my work around spring its not possible...hope to make it one day...and i very well know i'll go mad looking at the forest painted with red that the most popular rhododrandon colour though Yungtham boasts of 36 variety i have only seen red, lighter red somewhat like pink(dont nkow if that is faded) and the pure white.
As soon as we reached we view opened up into a valley with the river flowing below the hills with different shades of autumn tall mountains on all the sides some with snow.....The place was awesome(i wish i had some other word to describe it but i know my vocab is low so i keep repeating these words)...we took a breath then alighted from our jeep we were hit by a cold chily breeze...so we picked up our jackets and started off towards the river.......the place was untouched beautiful,clean....apart from Yak dungs........we busied ourself giving poses in all possible direction so that we would not miss a good scenery.......
Rhododendon trees
We spent some time here drank tibetian tea at exhorbitant prices 90 rs for 4 cups and 1 kurkure...still the salted tea was refreshing.....
Colour of autumn

Colour of autumn

Colour of autumn displayed by nature in the canvas of the earth -the hills.......the riot of colours took my heart away i had to stop to take a photograph.....
Yak houses
People build stone houses for yaks..there are few of then in this place...but it looks so good . antique and remote yet rechable.
on the way to yungtham
I was trying to capture the colours of the hill beyond but i was on a moving car and was not able to adjust properly...but i liked this pic ...the roads destroyed by running glacier water.......no roads are safe in the hills because of these running water........on our way back we went to hot spring....i dipped my feet for sometime there were some people in the bath tub...they say that the skin diseases will be treated with this water...the drive back was good reached lachung had lunch informed our driver we'll be walking ahead and he would pick us up on the way....we walkes for almost an hour had a nice and refreshing walk on the road....actually i was looking for pups...at high altitude people keep sheep dogs to look after sheep and yak......but unfortunately i found none......we had a long drive back to gangtok...we reached around 7 pm had dinner in one of the restaurants as we were too lazy to cook after the long drive...stayed at my brothers place overnight and took the 1.30 pm cab back to darjeeling. This ended our trip to North sikkin.
