everenchanting Gurudongmar lake

by mantru - last update: Feb 1, 2008

WE started for gurudongmar lake around 6 am as we had to return early so as not to get caught in bad weater which might take place during the afternoon....we reached 10.30 am and walked around the place enjoyed the beauty of the lake took lots of pictures.........i found this lake the most beautiful of the three i have visited ....
The lake behind,a kind of silence you'll experience here,a very spiritual feeling and of course the mighty peak behind dont know if it has a name, but they were loaded with snow and something amazing was there was snow on the other side of the lake and this side was barren and clear.

ready

prayers flag

the prayer flag fluttering in the chilly wind that blows across thid plain. Its bone chilling even in mid day.

tying the flags

One of my friend is a buddhist and she insisted we take the prayer flag and offer to Gods at the lake...we did it and you can see my posing actually after tying the flag to the poles...you'll experience a certain calmness and if you are not a spiritual person then also you'll feel holy seing the flags spreading the mantras via the wind.

celestial lake

draw us with your calmness,silence,beauty........till we feel it within us.

piling stones on the lake

One very common practice i have seen in few places are people piling the stones ....this was the second place..the first was in Vaishnao devi shrine it is believed whosoever dose ,their wish to build a house will be fulfilled ....i too did so in both the places...and i feel it does happen...for most people its just belief...but our life revolves around beliefs...correct!
gurudongmar frozen
We spent around an hour around the lake i wanted skirt around the lake but our driver warned that it may take too longa time for us to complete full circle so we just tried half the lake...the other two guys who were with us did not come down to the waterfront so we had to hurry up so as not to make them wait for us ...we started back towards thangu around 11.30 am...so yet another long driving back to camp...but we had no issues...drinking in the bounty of nature as we drove back...we hardly realised how soon we reached Thangu we took a break in the same place and had some more tibetian tea and started back towards Lachen...we reached around 3.00 to 3.30 pm lunch was waiting for us,had them..after that one more cup of tea.....we just did a bit of walking in the village when our other group rested...the village is small and you cannot miss the crispyness of the chilly snowey breeze even during the day when the sun is up and shining.........we drove to lachung the same evening passed some deadly roads....i said this because i realised the next day when we were returning to gangtok how the roads were........i dont know what is the name of the place but the bridge was so dangerous...all i could see the time i peeped out of the window was steep rock with no end...i could not peep out again till we were theu the bridge.......i was scared...really really scared...we reached Lachung by nightfall...and found our lodging...had dinner which was not good at all.....the worst in all the trip...drank few sips of tongba....next morning we were to start towards Yungtham valley the last place to visit before returning to gangtok....will continue in yungtham travelogue.

I am again planning to visit North Sikkim or Manali during Durga Puja depending on ticket confirmation. I have booked for both. I revisited your page to get some more info. Hope to be there on 5th of October!
