Kolomenskoye

by Anya_D - last update: Sep 8, 2002

High up over the steep banks of the Moskva River in a picturesque landscape an ancient site of Kolomenskoye stands surrounded by near-by settlements where sacred things of the Russian people have been created, shown to the world and kept carefully for centuries. A thousand of years ago one of the most ancient Moscow settlements called Dyakovo gorodishche (Dyakovo site) appeared. The first document to have mentioned the village of Kolomenskoye is the will chart of the Moscow’s Grand Prince Ivan Kalita; it is dated by 1339.

The Moskva River

Kolomenskoye sprang itself up to 2 banks of the Moskva River; it is a vast area of 390 ha (3,900 thousand of sq. m.).

Winter sports

The slopes and gills make Kolomenskoye a great winter sports area.

Church of the Beheading of St. John the Forerunner

The Church of the Beheading of St.John the Forerunner is situated in the village of Dyakovo, which is also a part of Kolomenskoye museum. This church is also known as the Dyakovo Church. There are existing records regarding its date of construction. Researchers consider, however, that the church was built in connection with the coronation of Ivan the Terrible in 1547 or with the expected birth of his son in 1554.

The Cathedral of St.Basil the Blessed on Moscow’s Red Square, which was constructed in 1555-1561, comes the closest architecturally to the Church of the Beheading of St.John the Forerunner. The similarity of structural, compositional and decorative techniques, along with the work of researchers, enables to believe that both buildings were constructed by the same architector, known as Barma and Postnik.

Transportation

Kolomenskoye is one of the most beautiful and peaceful corners of noisy Moscow. It is very conveniently located: take a metro train down the green line, and get off at Kolomenskaya station. The journey will take 10 minutes from any central station, plus ten munites on foot. You must go in the first coach from the center, when you will be out of the glass doors, turn left, and when you face the end of the corridor, turn right. Follow the same direction after you got out of the subway into the street, and in a few minutes you will see the fenced area with blue domes through the trees: you are here.

Blue-domed church

You will enter the estate through the back gates, and immediately will see beautiful church with five blue domes and yellow stars on it. This church was built in 1644-1670 and is typical of mid-17th century Russian architecture. It is devoted to the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan, which is celebrated in Russia on July 21. Each year there is a great church service on that date.

Park

The landscape park with the Linden alley dated by ÕIÕ th. ñ. in the centre of Kolomenskoye is a lovely piece of garden architecture. Not seen in this picture, but to the left there is the alley of ancient oaks. Oaks are the pride and joy of the museum. Those ancient trees are as old as 400 to 600 years of age; they are the oldest in Moscow area.

Cottage of Peter the Great

This cottage was built in 1702 in the Markov Island at the mouth of the Northern Dvina near Archangelsk (North of Russia, White Sea). Peter I lived there during for two and a half months while supervising the construction of the Novodvinsk Fortress situated on the riverbank opposite the island. In 1934, this building was set up in Kolomenskoye. Peter I’s Cottage was built by Russian carpenters and Dutch ship-building masters. Its architecture combines features of both the northern Russian style and the Dutch manner of building (the windows in particular).

Bratsk Stockade Tower

Next to the Cottage of Peter the Great you can see the tower from the Bratsk Stockade built in 1652 by the Cossacks near the river of Angara in Siberia. It was a rather small fortress, comprising a wooden stockade with four corner towers. One of them was transported to Kolomenskoye in 1959.

Gate-Tower from Nicolo-Korelsky Monastery

The Gate-Tower was constructed in 1691-1692 at the Nicolo-Korelsky monastery which is situated on the shores of the White Sea. It is one of the few examples of a wooden fortification which has survived to the present day. This monument was brought to Kolomenskoye in 1932. The architectural forms and construction devices are very characteristic of the architecture of northern Russia.

Front Gate

The Front Gate located in the eastern section of the estate is the main entrance. Its construction dates from 1672-1673. It consists of the complex of buildings.

Bell-Tower of St.George

The circular bell-tower of St.George was built next to the Church of the Ascension (next picture) by an unknown architect in the first half of the 16th century.

Church of the Ascension

The Church of the Ascension, built as a palace church in 1532, is the earliest and the most significant of Kolomenskoye’s buildings. It is supposed that the Church of the Ascension is a votive church constructed by Vasily III as an offering of thanks for the birth of his long-awaited son Ivan, to be known as Ivan the Terrible. The Church of the Ascension is known as the Russia’s first stone tent-roofed church. The sweeping silhouette of the church resembles the magnificent wooden tower-like churches erected by Russian carpenters.

The Church of the Ascension included into the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1994.
