Berenty Spiny Forest

Berenty - Spiny Forest and Sisal Plantation

Sisal Factory Berenty
The Reserve of Berenty is surrounded by the Sisal Plantation and you can visit the factory and the village where the workers live.
Once you are inside the reserve you cannot see the Sisal Plantation and therefore it doesn't spoil the views of the wildlife

Spiny Forest Wildlife

Berenty Private Reserve Berenty is a small reserve on the banks of the Mandrare River, west of Fort Dauphin, and is the place to see the best known Ringtail lemurs and Verreaux sifakas. It is roughly 250 hectares of spiny forest and dry Tamarind woodland. There is a network of broad, well-maintained paths and it is easy to walk around safely by yourself.
There are plenty Ringtail lemurs and Verreaux' sifakas, as well as some hybrid Brown lemurs, which were introduced to Berenty as well as White-footed sportive lemur, Grey mouse lemur.
Reptiles are very common including Warty and Jewell chameleons, skinks and lizards and snakes such as the Madagascar ground boa. The Radiated tortoise, Geochelone radiata, and the Spider tortoise, Pyxis arachnoides, are both found in the reserve.
Around 100 bird species have been recorded at Berenty.

This Sportive Lumer has a very young baby and spent most afternoons cuddled up with it in this tree

The Boa and the End of the Wood Pigeon

This unlucky wood pigeon came to an end at the drinking pool when it was caught and eaten by a Boa Constrictor

Sifaka Crossing the path

Sifaka Dance

The Verreuax Sifakas jumped across from tree to tree but when they had to cross the paths they had to jump along the ground, first making sure nobody was in their way

Ring Tail Lemurs

There are many Ring Tail Lemurs at Berenty and they go around in large groups, walking along the path behind or in front of you.

Birds all Around the Reserve

Berenty is a birdwatchers paradise. Although I prefer the Lemurs and Reptiles I saw many wonderful birds. My favourites were these 2 White Browed Owls sitting together on a tree
