Bukit Kaba, a Volcanic Crater

by adriansyah - last update: Aug 30, 2007

About Bukit Kaba

I'm on top of Bukit Kaba
A beautiful and natural panorama with moderate temperature has a number of visitors from domestic and foreign tourists to catch a view of a unique and spectacular sulfuric crater. The summit area of Kaba volcano contains three high peaks - Bukit Kaba, Bukit Itam (1893 m) and Bukit Malintang (1713 m). Vapors incessantly come out from 12 fissures in the earth and hot water springs are found in the vicinity. Of the three craters, one is still active. The area covers 13.490 hectares as it is proposed for tourism development.

How to get there?

For those who like mountain climbing, this crater complex is in the sulfurous mountains at 1937 m above sea level. Bukit Kaba is 19 km (11.8 miles) from Curup the capital of Rejang Lebong regency or around 104 km (64.7 miles) from Bengkulu town center. It takes around an hour drive from Curup or 30 minutes drive from Simpang Pasar through a bumpy road to POKDARWIS (the forestry station shelter).

Option: The regular track or the jungle track?

The climb begins at the POKDARWIS shelter, it’s around 2 hours climb to the top via the regular track if you are feeling energetic, or you can take the jungle track for getting a more beautiful view and a more adventurous trip. The jungle track is shorter than the regular track, but it’s very unwise to attempt the climb alone via the jungle track. People are advised to take a guide or join a climber group. You can take a guide at the POKDARWIS shelter for Rp. 50.000.

Take ojek to the top, why not!

If you are not sure that you are strong enough to climb, you can take ojek (motorbike that takes passengers) at Simpang Pasar to the top via the regular track for Rp. 25.000 (one way) and Rp. 50.000 (return).

Another words from Adrian

Hope all the info and tips above are useful for the climb. Please email me If you need a guided trip to Bukit Kaba, I'll be glad to help you.

Keep on traveling,
Adrian
