Wild Birdwatching in Hong Kong

by bpacker - last update: Aug 7, 2007

Alexandrine the Great
Though it may seem a little odd to suggest birdwatching in urban Hong Kong, there is a rich diversity of wild birds in the little green pockets of city space. Kowloon Park , for example, is reknown internationally by local and international birders as a total of 100 species can be recorded here during the migration period. It is also the residence of the beautiful Alexandrine Parakeet. The best way to see the birds is to pop over to Kowloon Park on a Friday morning to join an enthusiastic flock of birders . (Exit from Tsim Tsa Tsui MTR, bypass the mosque and proceed towards the park entrance, the meeting point is there. Be there at 730am.) This session is free, just bring your own binoculars.

Of all the birds I've seen in the park, the Alexandrine Parakeet is my favourite. It's loud in every sense, it squawks like there's no tomorrow and it is a bright green with a yellowish red beak. This little fella is a female since it lacks a band around its neck.

Common Rock Pigeon

Ok, I know this is a very common bird but I can't help noticing that the birds over here love to bask themselves in the sun. It didn't even flinched when I walked over, it just stretched its wings and re-adjusted its plump body on the sun-warmed ground.

Garrulax perspicillatus ( Masked Laughing Thrush)

Kissing Birds. The male is seen grooming its mate while she spreads her tail feathers in delight.

Garrulax perspicillatus ( Masked Laughing Thrush)

Hmm, a superhero bird since it's masked! But this superhero has a tendency to laugh loudly.

Copsychus saularis ( Magpie Robin, Female)

The Magpie Robin is a very common bird over here (unlike in Singapore where it's poached for its singing powess). The male is black and female is a slaty grey.

Sturnus nigricollis (Black Collared Starling)

Another common bird. But to a new comer like me, I found this bird handsome and distinctive with its black collar and yellow-ringed eyes.

Pycnonotus sinensis(Chinese Bulbul)

%The Chinese Bulbul look a lot like the yellow vented bulbuls in Singapore. The difference is that it does not have a yellow ass .

Orthotomus sutorius ( Common Tailorbird)

An Olive green bird with a rufous crown. This is the original tinker tailor since it stitches leaves to make a nest.

Very interesting account :) Hope I will not encounter a strong typhoon when I am in HK with my students next week.

Thanks for happy hour in Honkers :~) But I'll blisfully ignore that deliciously risky dim sum health hazard!

Alamak, now you should know our fear every summer; but sometimes we do enjoy a sudden day off due to horrible typhoon!!

A pigeon hole sounds perfect for a birder!
