Accra has now more than 3 millions inhabitants and is perhaps the most safe town in the world. Wherever you go in Ghana, you will feel free and secure. However, you will be careful in some places like Labadi Beach. It happens that mostly Nigerians steal mobile phones and other small quick negociable items. Don't show your valuable belongings. Ghanaians like to talk to you, they respect foreigners a lot. But when they come to you in the towns (not in the villages), they expect you give them some cash. Don't do it! Be careful with tips, people earn between 15 and 50 USD per month. By dashing them too much, you double their salary and create an inflation in the tarrifications for further tourists. I have been living in Ghana since 1999. With Mauritius and Mozambique, this is the best African place I ever visited. |
ADA On the Volta River, not so far from Aflao on the border with Togo, Ada is a nice small village for weekends. You will enjoy the nice beaches with coconut trees and palm trees. Not too much touristic and no too many people. For few cedis, you can go and fish or just sail on the sea or on the Volta River. (Be careful, don't swim in the Volta River). You can either go to hotels, there are always free rooms. Or go and sleep on the beach. There is absolutely no problem. People will help you by providind food or are going to harvest some fruits like coconuts for you. Or they will seel you fish (Barracuda is excellent) or you can buy fresh lobster you can grill yourself on the beach. Absolutely lovely. About One hour by car from Accra. |
