"My most memorable trips so far" Personal Page by Jefie
In May 2005, I made my very first trip overseas when I spent a week in England with my dear friend and fellow Laval University alumni Sylvia. As members of the Jane Austen Society of North America, we decided to go on an exploratory trip to England to visit the main sites related to our most beloved author. Of course, one week isn't much time, but we did manage to visit the towns of Guildford, Bath, Winchester and Chawton, and we also spent a very busy day in London. This was the last trip I made with my old and up-til-then faithful 35 mm camera, before it broke while we were in Bath. My pics from that trip therefore aren't the greatest, but I like to look at them once in a while to remind myself that I need to go back to England very soon!
This was my first time in Cuba, and Sylvain and I really enjoyed spending a week walking around the city of Havana and discovering some of the secrets of its rich and somewhat tragic history, as revealed by the faded beauty of La Habana Vieja and el Vedado. We've made some very good friends during our short trip to Cuba, who greatly helped us increase our knowledge of the Island's culture and people - I'm of course thinking of my good friend and fellow VTer Victor (fallingnow) and his lovely wife Lys! We hope to see them again very soon!
We spent an amazing week on the Riviera Maya, what a great way to wrap up my 2006 travels! I must admit that I didn't get much of a tan as we were too busy to spend much time at the beach. During the week, we visited the Mayan ruins of Tulum and Coba, the village of Playa del Carmen, we went snorkeling at Xel-Ha, swam in a beautiful cenote, visited the park of Xcaret and spent some time in a Mayan village. You can check out my tips and pics on my Quintana Roo page!
Paris, the best way to kick off my 2007 travel season!! I spent 10 wonderful days in La Ville Lumiere - the weather was great, warm and sunny the entire time we were there, which suited our plan to walk through the beautiful streets of Paris. Of course we also stopped by a few museums and spent a day at Versailles, all of which I've done my very best to make up good tips for. One of the highlights of my trip definitely was to spend a day with my good friend Linda, also known as VTer 36waterfalls. Thank you so much for this amazing day Linda, can't wait to meet up with you again!
How lucky am I?! In April 2008, I traveled to Madrid, and what a great experience it was! I spent 3 weeks in and around the capital of Spain (I also made it to Toledo, Alcala de Henares and Segovia) as part of a Spanish-language immersion program. On top of improving my knowledge of the language, I also learned a lot about the culture of this great country and I got to meet some fantastic people. A special thanks to VTers Cecile (CesVT), Santi (Redang), Ursula (Urzu), Nico (white smallstar), Molly (mollymoo0moo0), Elisa (elisabcn) and Joaquin (SirRichard). You guys made my trip unforgettable, hope to see you all soon somewhere in the world!
Well, here's another trip I hadn't really planned! In September I went to the 2008 Junior Pan-American Karate Games, which were held in Santiago de Chile. It was my very first time traveling to South America, and the fact that I got to do it with my nephew and watch him compete and win the silver medal made the whole trip an incredible experience! Although we spent most of our time at the (very cold) stadium, we did get to walk around the city a bit, meet plenty of new people from all over the Americas, and got to drink some really good wine :o) It was such a fantastic adventure, I think Kevin and I will cherish these memories for a really, really long time!
A few years ago, my in-laws discovered a little piece of paradise on earth in Caye Caulker, Belize, and in February 2009 we finally got to escape from the cold Canadian winter to see what it was all about! Sylvain and I spent 10 amazing days with them in and around the sunny island of Caye Caulker for a trip that was filled with adventures (we went swimming, fishing, snorkelling and hiking through Mayan ruins), and also with plenty of rum punch (!) and quiet, relaxing time. Definitely a place to put on your travel wishlist if it isn't already there!
After years and years of dreaming to go to Ireland, I finally made it to Dublin! Sylvain and I spent a fantastic week in "Baile Átha Cliath", exploring both sides of the River Liffey, spending a copious amount of time drinking beer to the sound of Irish music, and getting acquainted with the rich, complex history and culture of Ireland. There sure was enough to see and do in the city to keep us busy for a week, and yet I come back feeling as though I've only scratched the surface of the great mystery that is Ireland - I guess that leaves me with no other option: I'll have to go back!
