Eclectic Classics

Placebo at the Bercy, Paris 2006
I don't mean popular chart sellers. I mean sustainable, quality, remembered. A sample of my greats...

The Beatles - I think they're overrated (much to the disgust and disbelief of many) but there are, I admit, a few exceptional gems in their massive, (well marketed) collection.

The Kinks - More fun than the Beatles.

The Byrds - More innovative than the Beatles.

Pink Floyd - Psychedelic wizards.

Neil Young - Mr Distinctive, Mr Soul.

Nick Drake - The heart breaking heartbroken.

Neil Diamond - He is, He said. And I agree.

Bob Dylan - Sparked my obsession with Mozambique.

Michael Jackson - One concert I wish I'd gone to in the 80's.

Janis Joplin - Scream it girl.

Beck - Eclectic chameleon.

Leonard Cohen - A dark delight.

Eminem - Wordsmith extraordinaire.

Placebo - Seen in concert about 5 times.

David Bowie - Some not all but particularly Hunky Dory.

Mazzy Star - Haunting and melancholy.

Massive Attack - Trip hop joy.

Lamb - Original trip hop trendsetters.

The Everly Brothers - Set the scene for Harmonising.

The Drifters - Warm, classic and still going strong.

Nat King Cole - Unforgettable.

Nina Simone - Molasses and cigarettes.

Blondie - Atomic.

John Martyn - Awesome acoustic.

Portishead - Totally timeless.

Goldfrapp - Kitsch and kooky.

Joni Mitchell - Unique and unreplicable.

Bob Marley - Great with or without the green.

The Doors - Trite to say but truly ahead of their time.

The Smiths - Wry British brilliance.

Radiohead - Experimental experts.

Willy Mason - Wisdom of Youth.

And many more....

A Taste of Jazz/Soul/Funk

Al Green - The revered Reverend. Old school soul and honey.

Otis Redding - Romance is not dead.

Quantic Soul Orchestra and Quantic - Groovy big band meets electronica.

Alice Russell - Best British soul singer of the moment.

Northern Soul - Not a sound, a movement.

Shuggie Otis - Psychedelic soul architect.

Tamla Motown - So many hidden gems.

Jazzanova - Remix masters.

Giles Peterson - Man of good taste.

Miles Davis - The exquisite, Kind of Blue.

John Coltrane - A love supreme.

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue.

Canonball Adderley - Sexy Sax.

Blue Note Beats - groovy jazzy greatness.

Across Seven Seas

Ali Farka Toure - King of the Malian desert blues.

Amadou and Mariam - Malian Joy.

Ojos De Brujo - Fusion flamenco from Barcelona.

Bassake Sissoko - More Malian peace.

Chicago Afrobeat Project - Chicago on fire.

Trinity Roots - New Zealand Dub delight.

Ravi Shanker - Supreme Sitar Magic of India.

Talvin Singh - Electric eclectic.

Nitin Sawhney - Asian UK fusion factor.

Gotan Project - Tango Terrific.

Toumani Diabate - Malian master of the Kora.

St. Germaine - Parisian chic.

Radio Tarifa - Musical alchemists of Madrid.

Prince Buster - Jamaican King of Ska.

Os Mutantes - Brazilian psychedelia.

Fela Kuti - Nigerian Afrobeat Creator.
