Cannebière, number 12 through 20 | Cannebière, number 12 through 20 |
Rosalie, I have been to the Cannebière. And have finally found your former hotel.
- Obviously, all the buildings around number 16 were built around the beginning of the XIXth and have been kept mostly untouched. - However, most if not all ground levels have been more or less altered. - Only number 10 and number 20 have a number showing. - Number 10 belongs to a block that begins on the port and ends on Place du Général de Gaulle. It stands at the angle of the Cannebière and Place du Général de Gaulle. - Number 20 stands on a second block that begins on the northern side of Place du Général de Gaulle.
Then, number 12, 14, 16 and 18 must be between 20 and the angle with Place du Général de Gaulle but it is not easy to tell which is which. Actually, there are only two buildings. The only explanation would be that each of them had two entrances (which does not seem to be the case now).
The photo shows three buildings on the Cannebière, in front of the "Bourse de Commerce et d'Industrie". On the far left number 20 with the number showing. The middle building must be number 18 and 16 (no number showing). The building on the right must be number 14 and 12(no number showing). On its right, Place du Général de Gaulle. |
| Cannebière, number 16 and 18 |
| | Cannebière, number 16 and 18 Number 16 should be where stands at ground level the “Patisserie brasserie, le Bellagio” and where on your photo stands a shop with the name of “Linder”. Number 18 should be on the left and is the seat of an Insurance company but its address is given on the telephone book at number 16 (and they seem to own and use the whole building including all the upper levels). They have their logo on top of the building. Amazingly, though the building is still there, number 18 does not exist anymore! Rosalie, I feel that the room where you slept in 1964 is now the office of an insurance company staff member! |
| Hotel Bristol at number 18, Cannebière |
| | Hotel Bristol at number 18, Cannebière This is Rosalie's photo of Bristol hotel where she stayed in 1964. Ooops, I have not yet asked Rosalie if I could insert here her photo! Can I? Here is the link with Rosalie's Marseille pageThis was an ideally situated hotel, almost in front of the "Bourse de Commerce et d'Industrie", 100 m away from bottom of the "Vieux Port". Too bad it does not exist any more! When I found it was not there any more, I would have bet it was now the seat of a bank! I was not completely wrong... Your photo was taken from the side of the “Bourse” and the metal grid is its enclosure. I should have taken a copy of your photo with me, which would have allowed me to take the very same photo! If you look at my “Things to do” tip untitled “La bourse, the Comex”, you will see the same grid, shot from the other side (more or less from the hotel). |
| Cannebière, number 16 and 12-14 |
| | Cannebière, number 16 and 12-14 I wonder if the name of the “Patisserie brasserie", "le Bellagio” is not a joke. Bellagio is the name of an Italian town on the lake di Como but on the telephone book, it is written "le Bell Agio” (the beautiful agio) and the whole building (most probably including this shop) is owned by an insurance company with two names : AG2R (Prévoyance Assurance Epargne Santé), web site : http://www.mutmidi.com/ and La Mutuelle du Midi |
| | Cannebière, number 10 Cannebière, number 10 and Place du Général De Gaule on the left. The Vieux port in the far right. The building at number 10 has its number showing. |

My staying there was very short but I climbed up to the Notre-Dame though I had only 40 minutes ha-ha. What a coincidence right now I watch on TV a beach football match from Marseille | grandmaR Sun Jul 8, 2007 20:49 UTC Thank you for my travelogue!!
