Easter Sunday

We arrived a couple hours early and still were lucky to get a spot at the front of the crowd. We stood rooted to the group for almost 2 hours, enjoying one of the most fantastic displays of pageantry I've ever seen.

The Flag Throwing

I wouldn't have believed how much skill went into making flag throwing look easy. Pictured here are the adults, but the show started with young boys and moved up through the ages, getting progressively more difficult. I'll admit that at first we were unimpressed and anxious for the "main event" of the Scoppio del Carro. But, we relaxed into the slower pace of the day and let ourselves be floored by the skill of these men.

We don't know who he was or what sort of blessing we received but we enjoyed the moment nonetheless. It added to the sense of ceremony of an already elaborate morning.

Scoppio del Carro

When the main event finally began, there was a great sense of festivity. A dove "flew" from the Baptistry to the cart, lighting the fireworks that had been painstakingly placed there.

Our tradition of . . .no idea but we loved it!

At one point, people in peasants costumes handed eggs to some of the crowd. I'm assuming they were bona fide Easter Eggs. . .

Better Together

This would have been marvelous no matter what, but it was great to share the morning with Kali and Richie. We could look at each other in amazement and later confide just how glad we were to have gotten to see the entire pageant.
