History of Salib Putih estate | The graves of mr and mrs Van Emmerik |
Salib Putih estate was founded over a hundred years ago for the relocation of villagers who were left destitute after the eruption of Kelud volcano in East-Java (1901), by a former Dutch salvation army officer, A Th J van Emmerik (1858-1924) and his English wife Alice Cleverly (1871-1942). Their graves on the grounds can be visited. Their descendants live in Australia.
Salib Putih means 'white cross', the original Dutch name of the estate is 'Witte Kruis Kolonie'.
In the sixties Salib Putih almost went broke by mismanagement, but with assistance from churches in the Netherlands and Australia, as well as the Javanese Church (Gereja Kristen Java), it has made a full recovery. The 100 ha estate has now been divided in a foundation for social service (10 ha) and an agrobusiness enterprise (90 ha). The foundation operates an orphanage and a home for elderly poor, including some gardens and dairy cattle. The agrobusiness enterprise has recently built a camping ground and youth hostel, see our accommodation tips. |
