El Santuario del Senor Esquipula
Chimayo, New Mexico

This charming adobe chapel, situated at Santuario, near Chimay, New Mexico, was built in 1816 by Don Bernardo Abeyta. This is a shrine for the miraculous cure of disease, one of the few on the Ameircan Continent. The chapel remained in the family until 1929, at which time it was int he possession of Don Jose Chavez of Chimayo.

Prior to 1929 the chapel was roofed with its present tin roof and the wooden towers added, all of which were recent additions. A photograph by O.S. Emblem of Santa Fe, New Mexico, shows the chapel prior to this addition.

Interior

The Society for the Preservatio and Restoration of New Mexico Mission Churches purchased El Santuario in October 1929 adn turned it over to the Roman Catholic Church. Mass is again said in this old chapel and the keeper of the keys is Don Jose Chavez.
