This shows the Eilat harbor in the area of the hotels, just off downtown. The actual harbor for shipping lines is south of the tourist spots by about 5 kilometers. On the left you can see the canal that leads into the "inner harbor". The entire area is surrounded by hotels, restaurants and other tourist attractions. The town is about a 10 minute walk. |
| View from Eilat town center, Israel |
This picture shows the view toward the harbor from the town center. All the tall buildings you see in the background are hotels and I do mean ALL OF THEM.... |
| Yom Kippur dinner, Eilat, Israel |
We got togeather with some other friends in Eilat to have a Yom Kippur dinner. On this very religious holiday Eilat is packed to over capacity with the non-religious trying to escape the overbearing religious factions who try and "enforce" the religious laws. Such as no driving on Yom Kippur or eating (its a day of fasting). If you actually do drive on this day you may have rocks thrown at you by the religious fanatics who still live in the middle ages and do not believe in freedom of religion (unless it is their own form, of course). |
This is on the south beach in Eilat, looking toward the marina at the north beach. The mountains you can see on the right are already in Jordan, only a few kilometers away. The beach is great for diving and snorkling among the coral reefs and you may even see the ocassional dolphin swimming with you. |
| The Red Sea Star Restaurant in Eilat, Israel |
The Red Sea Star is a most unusal restaurant because it is underwater. If you can see where the boats are, the actual place where you sit and eat is several meters below that. It is great to sit and see your food out the window just before you eat it, fresh. No seriously though, you can eat and watch the fish do underwater acrobatics. It is quite fun and I guess they expect you to watch the show and not pay attention to the quality of the food or the price. It is too expensive and the food is mediocre, but it is worth it for the novelty (but only once I think). |
| Zohara in Red Canyon, Eilat, Israel |
This is the Red Canyon, just northwest of Eilat . This twisting and tortureously bent canyon is a place where you can see nature and her art. The canyon walls are basically red in color, blended with "stains" of other minerals that have discolored the sandstone. The winding bed of the canyon gives you new sights around each bend of the canyon walls. Don't miss this short and sweet product of nature. |
| Zohara and camel, Eilat, Israel |
Take a ride on a "Ship of the Desert", the camel. The camels here are of the single hump, the dromedary. They are not really comfortable to ride in the beginning if you know how to ride horses, the rythm is different and puts you off your stride, but after you get used to it, the ride is much easier onl you than a horse. Just don't let the camel breath on you unless you are close to a hospital, wow, talk about extreme halitosis. |
| Solomon's Pillars, Israel |
Just north of Eilat is the Timmna Park where you can find Solomon's Pillars. Here I photographed Tal as she was climbing one of the rocky paths to the top of the pillars. This extrodinary outcropping of stone seems to burst from the center of a field and "grow" to a height of about 30 meters. It reminds me on a small scale of Meteora in Greece. |
