this reunion picture was taken in the courtyard closest to where there cell's were located. nelson mandela is the tall white ~ haired gentleman in the back, second from right. |
| | courtyard present this is the current courtyard, same perspective as above reunion picture. the courtyard contains a few informative posters mounted in metal frames. |
| | inside block B a wave of tourists converge on nelson mandela's cell, which is to the right. the halls are very narrow, gloomy and are lit by a couple of fluorescent tubes. |
| | mandela's cell this pic is thru the glass window (complete with steel bars) part of the cell. the cell was left original. nelson slept on a floor pad, he was also issued some blankets, a small wooden bench, and a saucer / cup. |
| | wildlife there are many species of animals, birds and sea life in and around the small island. here is a penguin on the prison grounds. |
| | religious services there is a small building on site (green dome) that the prisoners used to attend services. the architecture of the mosque blends in with the rest of the prison compound. |
| | more wildlife there are hundreds of birds resting on the man ~ made concrete barriers leading to the entrance and dock of the island. notice the tip of the lighthouse in the far background. |
| | ferry boat here is one of a few ferry's used to navigate the choppy waters of the atlantic ocean. there is seating inside and on the outside top deck. if you sit outside bring a warm jacket or sweater as the winds make for a little chilly ride. the ferry takes about 50 minutes to travel the 7 miles to the island. |
