the view from robben island across table bay (atlantic ocean). the waters are very choppy and cold! you will see alot of birds and penguins wandering around the shore. |
| | helicopter mishap ? this wreckage washed up on the shore was actually a bus helicoptered in. this luxury bus was flown here to take the then " first lady " of the usa (hiliary clinton) and her entourage on a tour of the island. i guess the old prison buses were not good enough for them ... give me a break!. there were actually two sent, but this one snapped from the helicopter and fell to the sea. the bus wreckage is now part of the tour.
* actually looks like a tuna boat ... hmm, not sure. maybe the guide was pulling our leg! |
| | world war II another part of the tour goes by an old world war II bunker, used as protection, it still has a few coats of camouflage. there are also a few rusty turrrets around. |
| | prison grounds no one ever escaped alive from robben island, those that somehow scaled the bob wired fences and slipped past the armed guards, met there tragic fate at the hands of the mighty atlantic! |
| | lighthouse this old lighthouse was used to help navigate the waters of the atlantic when transporting prisoner's at night. although island tours are only during daylight, the beacon still works. (well, that's what they said anyway). |
| | prison tour the tour buses are actual prison buses. they are very uncomfortable, belch huge amounts of exhaust into the air and rattle alot. the busses however play a major role in the tour and help you get the full experience the island and all its history have to offer. |
| | prison buliding the prison itself as you can see is mostly made of stone and mortar, in person it feels very surreal and is really an eyesore. |
| | freedom i saw this sign when exiting the prison grounds, and it says it all. a picture is really worth a thousand words! I spent a few minutes here reflecting on the times and tribulations of this injustice ... now finally free! |
