no one escapes

prison tour bus
The tour of robben island is done by a guide. many of the guides were imprisoned here so they know exactly what they are talking about! the bus we were is an original prisoner bus ! the tour guide is known by his prison number rather than by name.
dock

welcoming dock

this is the arrival and departure dock. notice the huge posters depicting the earlier prison days!

solidarity

pile of rocks?

this looks like just a pile of rocks, however this is actually a symbol of solidarity against apartheid. each person imprisoned here left one rock as a showing of togetherness and strength. the first rock in the stack was put there by nelson mandela, which if course is buried deep underneath.
quarry cave

meeting room

this small "cave" in a rock quarry was the meeting place of some top political prisoners. The word was, guards avoided this cave because of the terrible smell from the urine and feces planted there.
quarry

rock quarry

this is a wider shot of the quarry where prisoners broke up rocks most of the day as punishment. nelson mandela and his top political aides spent day after day and year after year in the quarries.
antelope

much wildlife

there are many animals and birds on the island and are protected by the south african government.
robben island sign

pounding waves

as the bus tour continues, we stopped to take a picture of this small wooden sign that simply reads " robben island ".
