Here we go again! Ballooning can be done in Albuquerque through many seasons, and this spring the weather has been WONDERFUL for taking to the skies. Salida Del Sol is our pilot Scott's baby, and we crew for him as our schedules allow. Today the occassion was our honorary crew cheif's birthday! May we celebrate many more in this manner!
Happy birthday Tracy! |

Crewing means hard work and a lot of fun! As part of the birthday surprise, some ex crew who moved to Texas joined us. As did a few kids. When the crew includes minors, us adults are relegated to the back of the truck. This works for me as this is the smoking area! As we meander roads, tracks, and suffer some bumpy rides, we watch for our balloon in the sky above. Okay, it's cold this time of day ... but it's still fun! |
.
There she is!!! Scott takes Salida up into the heavens, and skims the ground too - just depends on the wind conditions. Today we keep heading north despite our desire to head south.

Sometimes I think my New Mexico page should be titled, "Forty Shades of Brown" :) Despite the earthy tones, the desert has a beauty of it's own that these pictures can't begin to capture.
As we wander we come across lonely house with waving inhabitants, unofficial trash heaps, and the occassional carcass. Last week we wandered across a dead pig, the week before a dead cow, this week a very sad looking dead dog. Oh well, the cycle of life continues .... |
.
Our out of towners taking time to spot our balloon. Welcome 'home' Dustin and Wynn :)
| | .
Our local crew is doing the same! The birthday gal and her friend (Tracy and ??) are also looking up. So with all these folks spotting, I can snap a pic or two and not feel guilty, right? |
.
Beauty in motion ...... taking us to new heights.

Since the wind wouldn't do as Scott wanted, we ended up carrying pilot and balloon over a quite a trek through a field and over a barbed wire fence in order to get us to a deflation point. Two pairs of torn jeans, a realization of expired tetanus status, huffing and puffing as our cardio for the day brought us to a safe place. Locals helped us pack up and shared bits of their local Mexican horse racing culture with us too! After all that hard work, and a return to our launching point, we had to honor our first timers who flew today with the ballooning initiation' with a thankful prayer by our pilot and some liquid refreshment ;) |
