Finding Oneself

by painterdave - last update: Sep 9, 2009

In Bonnieux, France--my painting kit follows me

Being Happy

I was a public school instrumental music teacher for all my career in teaching. I tried to open doors for students to appreciate good music. I wanted them to have an open mind regarding all types of music. This quote by Elvis kind of sums it up.
"I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to."
I wanted my students to know how much more difficult it is to write a symphony than write Don't Step on My Blue Suede Shoes.

Now I am just try to be a happy painter, mostly with watercolors. I love to travel and paint what I see. Meeting people along the way is what I enjoy the most. I have the best friends on VT. They are so loyal and kind.
One footprint for history

He left a part of himself

Centuries ago a native American Indian placed his footprint along with other artwork on a rock in what is now eastern Arizona.
We all strive to leave a piece of our best for others to enjoy. I have stained glass windows in two churches that I built, and stained glass windows in Japan, Germany and Denmark, and many people I have met now have my paintings. I hope that they will be enjoyed for many generations and not sent to the attic to be refound and wondered about later on.
I don't think that my little attempts will last as long as this artist's.
Two fishing pals leave Genoa

Finding Beauty Around the World

These two old fisherman live in south Genoa, Italy. I saw them preparing their boat and rowing out to sea to do a little fishing.
How lucky they are to have each other, and to live in such a beautiful city.
If you ever visit Genoa be sure and walk along the waterfront in the southern part. There are also some terrific restaurants in that area.
Some times when I can't sleep I go out with these guys on a glassy sea and blue skies. The day I remove this photo for another, i will be a bit sad. They must be such good friends to do this everyday together. It would be difficult to do it alone.

Famous travel quotes

Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything.

The saying "Getting there is half the fun" became obsolete with the advent of commercial airlines."

a church in Taos, New Mexico

Taos, N.M.

If you ever get the chance to visit northern New Mexico, don't pass it up. This church is in Taos, which is a very historical town and very colorful. Kit Carson, the famous scout made his home here. I am sure you have seen photos of the picturesque Indian Pueblo just outside of Taos.
The new bridge crosses the Rio Grande Canyon in north of town. And of course, Taos has that great ski area visited by people from all over the world.
There's more inside...

Padova, Italy

I have come to love this city. It doesn't try to act live a tourist trap, yet you will find many treasures of art in Padova, in particular Giotto's masterpieces near the center of Padova.
The best treasure, however, is that they have themselves, the people are friendly and make an effort to make a visitor feel welcome.

Designs

There are many large churches in Padova, like any Italian city. After awhile you begin to ignore them because you have seen them everyday. But I like to look closer, and capture pieces and enjoy how they are made. The design in this small piece of a large cathedral is especially interesting.

Wow, you moved to Italy??? Amazing! I don't think we will get there probably until our 5 year anniversary...just as long as we get there before Venice sinks into the sea!! We will get a passport for Mike after the holidays. Wedding is in 6 months!
