Khartoum to Medani by road

by uglyscot - last update: Feb 1, 2007

Boring, boring, boring

typical [boring] scenery
The road used to be flat dusty land and punctuated by villages, though now these are expanding on both sides of the road and new buildings are rising out of the dust. But still it is not the most exciting journey one can take.
In this travelogue I will give a few 'warts and all' glimpses of this vast are, which despite appearances was , until recently, the source of Sudan's income.

.

The river is never too far away.
goats grazing on waste

Animals-

cattle, sheep and goats abound, with donkeys for transporting people and goods.
harvest stacked

agriculture

It is agricultural land, so signs of harvest can be seen.
immigrant shelters

immigrants

immigrants come to help with the harvest and build shanty towns and villages.

Shane- interesting page on this unknown (to me) place. The scorpion & cemetary tips are particuarly interesting. However- from your shopping tip-well-I would NOT be tempted to buy spare parts & tyres lol!

Interesting mosques and gubbas. The cemeteries look different from the European ones, but do we need anything more after death? I didn't realise travelling on Sudanese roads can be so dangerous, and when I think of the scorpions... Interesting updates.

Learnt more of life in Sudan after reading this page. Thanks for sharing. At least, it is easy to play football so much open space.

It's very interesting to read about a place and culture I know so little about. Thanks for sharing this information :))
