York VT Meeting Jan 20th-21st 2007

by northeast80 - last update: Mar 19, 2007

Where did the flag come from?
As mentioned on my homepage, I'm a VT meeting virgin no longer. Everyone was so welcoming, funny and very interesting to talk to.
Here's a link to the page that DAO and Gillybob built

YorkMeeting2007

I shall build seperate tips in a York page for the places we ate at, shopped at, where I stayed. York

After getting off the coach at the station, dropped my luggage off at my hostel and went to meet everyone at Cliffords Tower around 11am. Ricky52 gave me my name badge (thanks for that Ricky), everyone needed warming up so we went to Starbucks for a coffee. Then began our tour, we got to the Shambles, the Minster, Guy Falks' Birthplace, well all around the centre really. DAO had really done his research on where to go so we weren't just wandering around aimlessley and got all the history down to a T, I was really impressed about his dedication to the whole meeting, thank you very much!
Well by that point we were getting quite cold again and wanted something stronger, it was a Saturday so everywhere was really full, we found one bar in some cellars for a quick snifter.
There was much more of York to see so off we went, stopping at a Hog Roast place for some much needed sustenance.

AAAAArgh, just spent half an hour adding more and it vanished!

Discovered Scotts only does a hog roast on Sundays so we went to another place instead, £2.70 for pork with apple sauce and scratching.
We went on to the interior of the Minster (didn't pay the £5 entry though), walked along the walls for a bit, saw the runied abbey and decided we were getting a little thirsty.
Next stop was Plonkers, the building was just keeping clear of the floods, we settled in here for a while, sharing stories, jokes, watching the hail and rain from the cosy insides. Haldane and Sugababe came to meet up with us. We stayed here a little too long as the the ghost tour slipped our minds, we caught up with the last half hour or so.
The character leading us around was in full Victorian regalia, leading us around the city trying to scare the whits out of us! He would have succeded in giving me nightmares if the alcohol consumed throughout the night didn't interfear.
Some of the reprobates
Dinner was at Guy Falks' Hotel, I had deep fried camembert to start and seafood linguini to follow (I tried to put out of my mind the thought of Suet's profession!)
We moved by the fire after eating to drink a bit more, we didn't leave until 12.30 and moved onto a bar in a converted church, by this time there was only Poons, DAO, rcsparty and I left. And here we stayed until closing.
Luckly my hostel bed was made for me, all I had to do was crawl into it.
Wouldn't like to step out of that pub later....
After my free breakfast I, slowly, made my way to the Castle. Met up with DAO, DaveyJB and his partner, Haldane and Sugababe, had a coffee first to warm up and made our way to Dick Turpin's grave, the Minster, met up with Gliiybob for a hog roast at Scott's this time.
Went down the shambles, we got in to see Guy Falke's house this time, the nice lady let us in to see the rooms.
We stopped for a cup of tea and then said our goodbyes.
I picked up my stuff from my hostel, and had a wander around some more walls before getting the coach back.
Inside (the free part) the Minster
It was a fantastic weekend, great to be around like minded people, have a lot of laughs, drinks and food.
Thank you to everyone involved for making my 1st VT meeting an excellent experience, and I look forward to more in the future.
Poons' travel mate
The York kids of today.....tsk tsk
