| Pyramid of the Magician, Uxmal, MX |
Not built to current codes This photo shows the pitch of the stairs of the Pyramid, and also their shallowness. A step in a modern staircase by comparison is not as high as these steps, nor as shallow. People who have had the experience of climbing one of these temples say the same thing -- going up is the easy part. Being up at the top and looking down is the tough part. Hello vertigo! |
| Temple Chenes, Uxmal, Mexico |
Temple Chenes The Mayan ruins strongly demonstrate the intercity relationship among the various Mayan cities. The Temple Chenes has an architectural style found in Campeche, but the materials and techniques are local to the Puuc region. |
| Mayan carvings at Uxmal, Mexico |
Ornamentation Uxmal had an outstanding display of Mayan carvings. Generally, the buildings were much more ornate than those at Chichen Itza. |
Quadrangle of the Birds The Quadrangle of the Birds gets its name from the sculpted birds that decorate the frieze. |
| Nunnery Quadrangle, Uxmal, Mexico |
Nunnery Quadrangle The Nunnery Quadrangle is a collection of well preserved buildings with substantial ornamentation. Because Mayan records were destroyed, archaeologists can only speculate on the purpose of the Nunnery Quadrangle, but most experts think its purpose was religious. |
| Western Edifice of Nunnery Quadrangel, Uxmal, MX |
Western Edifice of Nunnery Quadrangle The western edifice is a classic display of the ornate Mayan carvings. |
| Ring in Ball Court, Uxmal, MX |
Ball Court Many Mayan cities have ball courts, but experts have only been able to speculate on the purpose of the game, although they believe it had a ceremonial purpose, and was not strictly a sport. The ball court at Uxmal is quite a bit smaller than others. |
Governor's Palace It is believed this structure was built between 900 and 1000 A.D. This building also has an ornate frieze. Another distinctive feature is the pair of triangular porticos. In the foreground of this picture is the Throne of the Two-Headed Jaguar. |
