Koninginnedag

<font color=orange font>"Queens-day" is a national holiday.

On 30 April (if it's a Sunday it will be cellebrated on the 29th) our Queen Beatrix will visit all kinds of organized local events together with Prins Claus and other members of our royal family.

<B><size=+3>HISTORY</B></size=+3>

<b><size=+1>Queen Wilhemina</b></size=+1>
On the 31st of August 1889, the birthday of Prinses Wilhelmina, "Koninginnedag" was celebrated for the first time

The initiative of this celebration was taken bij the liberal, who wanted to emphasize the national unit.

Because her birthday was also the last day of the traditional schoolholiday, it soon became a celebration for children. The celebration of that day got a extra impulse in 1902 after Queen Wilhelmina had been very ill. The news of her recovery was received with so much joy that "Koningennedag" became a real celebration of the common people.

During the time that Queen Emma, mother of Queen Wilhelmina, lived on Paleis Soestdijk during summertime, it was customary that the population of Baarn gave her flowers on her birthday (2 augustus).
After her marriage, Prinses Juliana moved into Paleis Soestdijk and took over tradition of her Grand-mother on her birthday (30 April).

After the inauguration of Juliana Queen of the Netherlands, Koninginnedag was automaticly celebrated on the 30th of April.
During the reign of Queen Juliana it became normal everyone got a day off, and that's why the 30th of April became a National Holiday.

<b><size=+1>Queen Beatrix</b></size=+1>
To honour her mother,Queen Beatrix did decide in 1980
to maintain Koninginnedag on the 30th of April, instead to celebrate it on her own birthday (31 January)
However, she changed the celebration of it, by visiting al kinds of activities in one or two places in the country.

Wilhelmina: 6 Sept. 1898 - 4 Sept. 1948
Juliana : 4 Sept. 1948 - 30 April 1980
Beatrix: 30 April 1980 - present

<font color=orange font>Bevrijdingsdag

On May 5th 1945 World War II came to an end in the Netherlands. A German and Canadian general signed the officiel in "Hotel de Wereld" in Wageningen.

The Netherlands was celebrating. Orange knots on jackets and dresses, red-white-blue flags were tied to bike's and balkony. Dutch childeren tasted for the first time in there life chocolate and chewing gum.

American and Canadian soldiers were driving true the streets with tanks and were cheered. Everybody was dancing in the street.
After 5 years the war was finally over.

Libaration Day, or as we call it "Bevijdingsdag" is still celebrated on the 5th of May. But most people who experienced it are no longer among us. A little over a half century the nature of the celebration has changed.
The freedom of the population that live in the Netherlands become more and more an emphasize.
Liberation Day has become a day of freedom.

Many things are organized on many locations in the country. Freedomfestivals: rap, house, hip-hop, countryrock, speedmetal, hindipop, rai, salsa, soul, rock en roll, folk, trashfunk, blues, etc.

The evening before, all the victims of the war are remembered. Queen Beatrix will place a wreath down by the national monument at the Dam in Amsterdam.
At 8 o'clock sharp there will be 2 min. of silence. All trains, trams busses will stop, even some motorists will pull there car over.

Only the birds will keep on singing ...
