Stone balls........................ .......for moving the large stones, apparently. I suspect they were always short of wood for rollers on Malta. |
| | A vast pot; goodness knows what for. Neolithic artefacts are rare enough, but to find this pot just sitting there in the open air (just like the fat lady's lower half) was really rather surprising. It would reach up to my waist; at least a metre tall. |
Altars and libation stones in all the apses..............carved animals on the walls in one, although too eroded to photograph............
| | A stone staircase, leading nowhere and with no explanation............. |
A great slab of stone, carved out into a rectangular depression, with libation depressions within it for sacred deposits (oil? wine? blood?)
| | Another libation stone, this one knee-high....... |
The site in its glory, complete with cranes.........

Basaic Sat May 23, 2009 19:51 UTC Wow! Interesting place. Malta is high on my wish list. | Irina_Blyumina Wed Sep 19, 2007 16:40 UTC Hi! I visited Tarxien and arheological museum. Prehistorical Lady's legs are fanny. I look at the picture every time I want some sweets... Thanks for your reply. Irina | unravelau Sat Jun 23, 2007 21:35 UTC Any chance that the huge pot could have been for wine stomping? | Mariajoy Sat Feb 10, 2007 07:51 UTC Absolutely fascinating!! Your photos have heightened my curiosity about this place! What a find! |
