"Third annual VT Glühwein meeting in Karlsruhe" Top 5 Page for this destination Karlsruhe Travelogue by Nemorino

The third annual VT Glühwein meeting in December 2006 was organized by Bernd_L, shown here in a Karlsruhe tram with Sonja (yumyum) and Holger (HORSCHECK) on his right, and with Ingrid (Igraine) and Claudia (Gammy1968) on his left.

If Holger and Sonja don't look like they are freezing and shivering in this photo, it's because they're not. We've had an unusually mild winter so far, and the people who sell Glühwein -- the traditional hot spicy mulled wine for cold winter nights -- have been having a hard time of it.

In one of the Frankfurt newspapers, the Frankfurter Rundschau, there was a cartoon recently about the warm weather, showing a sweltering Santa Claus trying to sell "Glühwein on the rocks". Nearby a man was telling his grandchildren: "It kept coming down out of the sky and made everything white, the trees, the roofs ..." And one of the children said: "Komm Opa! ... Nicht verarschen!!" Which means roughly, "Come off it, Grandpa! Don't try to pull our legs!"

Ingrid (Igraine) came all the way from Middenbeemster, which is in the Netherlands not far from Amsterdam, to attend our meeting in Karlsruhe. She stayed for the weekend and had great weather, so I expect she will soon be making a Karlsruhe page. I hope so, anyway.

Claudia (Gammy1968) is German and lives in Frankfurt am Main, not far from my house, actually. She has just put up a new travelogue on the VT meeting we had last August in Frankfurt. She and Jim, her husband, have already signed up for the next Frankfurt meeting in January 2007, and for the EUROMEET2007 on Santorini.

Jim (outforlunch) is an accomplished and speedy video maker. On the train going back to Frankfurt with Claudia and me he said something about having to get up early and go to work the next morning, but somehow within a few hours he had made a really nice, artistic video of our meeting. You can see it here.

Jim is originally from Meadville, Pennsylvania, but he now lives in Frankfurt with his wife Claudia and their daughter Emily.

Natalie (nhcram) came all the way from Dover, England, to attend the meeting.

On her Paris page she points out that Paris is only two hours from Dover by EuroStar train through the Channel Tunnel. I was totally envious when I read that, because the EuroCity train from Frankfurt to Paris still takes over six hours -- but from December 2007 they say it will only take 3 hours 50 minutes on the new TGV Est.

Sonja (yumyum) lives in Zürich, Switzerland, but she recently spent two and a half years traveling and learning Russian. She is now back in Zürich but is "already dreaming again" about future travels.

Her latest VT page is about Sevastopol in the Ukraine -- one of the many exotic places she has been to in the last few years.

Holger (HORSCHECK) is from Germany but doesn't do VT pages about it. He's been to 27 other countries, though, and has posted lots of texts and photos about 26 of them, usually with a cogent quotation hidden away someplace in tiny red letters. On his new Wroclaw page, for example, the quotation is from Robert Louis Stevenson:

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”

His 27th country is Lithuania, where he went last summer, but he hasn't put that one on his map yet.

Christine (tini58de) lives near Karlsruhe with her husband Heinz (Madschick). On their recent trip to Marseille they went to a boules factory called La Boule Bleue, where they took a tour of the factory and then bought some balls. "Each and every ball is hand-made, so they are really special!"

On my Things to Do tip about the Margrave's Palace in Karlsruhe I have just added a photo of Heinz playing boules in front of the palace at dusk.

Also I have just added six completely new Things to Do tips about Karlsruhe, so please feel free to have a look.

Fascinating travel pages of the city. CallBikes rental system certainly sounds interesting. Impressive cycling infrastructure with red cycling lanes at intersections certainly looks great to us. Also great photos from VT meetings. ~ho & pang

A very interesting page. Loved reading about the "Tulip girls" and I thought the 'call bikes' were a great idea!
