Hong Kong

by dutch-tulips - last update: Sep 10, 2002

I was in Hong Kong in October of 1999 for 5 days. I have to say that Hong Kong is like no other place in the world, it's unique in it's own way.

I arrived at the Chek Lap Kok Airport and took a shuttle to our hotel in North Point. Although it's far from the action of Kowloon, The Newton Hotel is charming, clean and a block from the subway station.

The 5 days I spent in Hong Kong was full of shopping and eating. Most subway stations exit out of shopping malls, my favorites being Landmark, Pacific Place and Harbour City.
The food is great especially dim sum at Harbour City Restaurant across from the Star Ferry station. You'll get fabulous food and a great view of Hong Kong. Another treat is the Manila Mango Tart, I think I bought a dozen of those while I was in Hong Kong, they are so good you eat a whole tart in one gulp. Aberdeen and the famous floating restaurant is good just to have the experience of being ferried into the restaurant.

While in HK, don't forget to go to visit Victoria Peak especially at night, Temple Street and the Jade Market, and if time permits Lantau Island and the Po Lin Monastery to see the giant bronze Buddha.

Some travel advice, although English is spoken, you will encounter some places where it is not, like restaurants and small shops. The smaller boats (not the Star Ferry) gets very rocky especially on the trip to Lantau Island, take medication or grab a deck seat. Otherwise, enjoy!
