Up the Seine by Batobus ( Pt.1;to Concorde Bridge)

by hquittner - last update: Nov 19, 2006

We embark at the Eiffel Tower

Pont d'Iena
We boarded the Batobus from the dock below the Quai de Branley in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with the Pont d'Iena to our left and the Palais of Chaillot almost hidden across the river. The bridge is early 19C and its flanks are covered with horses and eagles.
Passerelle de Billy

Passerelle de Billy

We proceded upstream toward the footbridge (passerelle).
Zoave on Pont d'Alma

Pont d'Alma.

The Palais de Tokyo on the left was obscured by trees and the next bridge was Pont d'Alma. Passing under it we saw the revered statue of the Zoave at water level. It is used as a marker by the Parisians to mark the rising levels of the Seine in pre-flood conditions.
Bateaux at their dock

The Bateaux Mouches

On our left (the right bank) we saw the moorings of the Bateaux Mouches and smaller craft(vedettes).
Pont des Invalides

The next bridge (Pont des Invalides)

As we approached this bridge we could see the guilded horse of the bridge beyond it , the Pont Alexandre III. The piers of the approaching bridge bear carved figures.
Pont Alexandre III

The Pont Alexandre III

The figures on the Pont are guilded. We could not see the vista toward the Invalides
Winged Horse

The Horses on the Pont Ends

The distinctive marks of the Pont Alexandre III are the winged horses on posts at the ends.
Place de la Concorde ahead on left

The Place de la Concorde

The place quickly comes into view. identified by the Obelisk sticking up with a newly guilded top and its cista scarred from all angles by the ugly Ferris Wheel which may someday be removed again.

Well, even in Belgium you can find horsemeat in every butcher, so why not in Paris? Horsemeat is common in lots of European countries. It's just a cultural difference. By the way: I don't like horsemeat at all :-)

I much appreciated your tips on Le Louvre and I'm pleased to see that others liked these forgotten sections of the museum.
