| Page Views: 4,798 | Great hiking trails around the world :-) by Trekki - last update: Jun 16, 2008 |
Well, my brain seems in contant progress with new ideas :-)
My newest idea, as a lot of us here share the love for hiking and trekking, I will use this album to share hiking and trekking descriptions of fellow VTers. I don't intend to list the well trotten hiking paths here, but more of the lesser known ones = the ones, real hikers and trekkers like. It is not limited to several days hikes, but also dayhikes, which lead into exciting and not that much known terrain.
Please drop me a line, send me a mail or VT postcard, when you find nice hike descriptions here :-)
Oh, and if this album is full one day, I'll keep Oz and NZ here, and transfer the other countries to continent albums :-)
Thanks Ingrid |
E U R O P E SwedenOf course, Sweden is high on my list, and Simone has wonderful descriptions of her hikes in the Fjällen, Sweden's lovely north: Padjelanta Nationalparkand Abisko National Park .
. Italy: Our Richie has some great hut-to-hut hiking trails with backpacks for northern Italy: Trentino / Alto Adige, Hiking around Tre Cime, Hiking in Marmolada range, from St. Magdalena in Vilnos to Lozzo di Cadore.
. Iceland: Steve (@Zweiblumen) has a very exciting page on his hikings on Iceland . Don’t miss this one !
Mark and Sara (travelfrosch and sarams) have recently been on a trip to Iceland and Faroer. They did some hiking on Hrísey Island and describe it as not overly challenging but very stunning landscapes. Indeed, just the photos should make all of us hikers want to go there :-)
. Greenland:
Or why not Greenland ? Check, what Ian wrote about independent hiking on Greenland
. Faroer Islands: Another fascinating unusual trekking are the scattered islands of Faroer. Ian has done another great hiking trip to Faroer Islands.

N O R T H A M E R I C A Canada. United States of AmericaGlenn (@Bwana Brown) recently did some awesome day hikes in Glacier NPark. Who says, that day hikes are not inspiring and serious hikes ? |
L A T I N A M E R I C A Peru: Richie did some exciting hikes in Peru as well. Trek with him and D in Huaraz, Cordillera Blanca , but be aware, this takes you as high as 4750 m ! Or, join him and D to Machu Picchu on the Inka Trail ChileMaybe I am allowed to add one of mine as well. It is PN Cerro Castillo, a beautiful natural reserve in southern Chile, near Coyhaique, 6 days of trekking.
Ecuador Once again, Richie and Doreen have put on their backpacks to explore some hiking grounds. Go and read about their hike around Cotopaxi in Ecuador. Let's wait and see which other destinations will come :-) |
A U S T R A L I A So many great hiking in Australia ! Robert (@Robertgaz) recommends to hike the 140 km Cape to Cape Walk Track near Margarete River in Western Australia.
Down south in NSW is great hiking, too. Check the hikes, Shelley (@Shelley Keating) described for Royal National Park (BTW: this page of Shelly inspired me to start this collection of great hiking trips worldwide :-)
Robert (@Robertgaz) just returned from holidays in Queensland and has inspiring writings about Springbrook - hiking among waterfalls :-)) He has some good maps included :-)
And again thanks Robert for another addition. This time not hiking, but kayaking, he describes a 3 days trip in Hinchinbrook Island :-) |
A S I A Now where to place this one, it is Russia, but in its east. Paul (ekahau) has got me hooked now to go to Tuva for endless horseriding and yurt living, not to forget the marvellous food, the nomads make out of yak milk.....
Nepal: I have never been to Nepal (and most probably will not go, as it is already too crowded for my liking), but just recently I have read about a group of Nepali women who have started to break up the traditions in their country and formed a Woman Trekking comany: The Three Sisters. I have heard only good reports about these girls, they train women to be female porters and guides, which is a huge achievement for a lot of these women who otherwise would have a much harsher life in the fields. Read also about their empowering project: Empowering of the Women of Nepal, an NG Organisation.
Fascinating to read is also Fernando’s (aka Darthmilmo) excellent description about his hike in Nepal - Annapurna Circuit. Nothing for the weekend hiker, as it is a minimum 20 days trek in high altitude. |
A F R I C A and N E A R E A S T Algeria:Jean-Louis did a great and special trek - it is about a multi day camel trek, he did in the area to see the famous cave paintings and the incredible beautiful mountains: Tassili n'Ajjer National Park.
Lesotho: Something very much unusual ? Well, then join Steve (@Zweiblumen) into Lesotho, for real exciting scenery to hike around ! |
