Tonight i saw again a movie called "Lost in Translation". I don?t know how many times i?ve seen it, but I remember that the first time was when I was living in Paris and this film was being screened in the cinemas. I like it not only because of the story, I think there is much more into it. I like so much the scenes of the frenzying life in Tokyo, all those big bright advertisements full of lights everywhere, lots of people in the streets, the madness of the games centres and then the contrast with the quietness and stillness of the temples and beautiful gardens. And also the music throughout the whole film, perfect fit. I remember one line of the main actor saying "I prefer seating here" (on a high bench) "at least if I fall someone might notice". And the scene when the main actor sings a quite known song from Roxy Music from 20 years ago!!!...: "I could feel at the time There was no way of knowing Fallen leaves in the night Who can say where they?re blowing As free as the wind And hopefully learning Why the sea on the tide Has no way of turning More than this - there is nothing More than this - tell me one thing More than this - there is nothing" |
| | 01.03.2006 The first time I heard about them, it was about two years ago when the second movie was screened in a festival in Lisbon. I had already started working abroad, so I was not there in the exact day and I missed the movies... Recently, I bought them in Amazon and they arrived in early January. But just last Saturday evening I took the time to see the two movies in a row from 1am to 4 am... The name of the movies is "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset". What does it has to do with VT? Well,... probably not much, just only that the story begins in a train going from Budapest to Wien. And I mention these movies because I liked them very much. The story runs around a man and a woman that met on this train in their early 20's and live one adventurous and incredible night in the streets of Wien. They agreed that they would not exchange addresses or phone numbers, because it would not make sense to make such fake ties between them, as they lived so different lives, ...thousands of km apart... But when they split in the next morning, in the very last moment they finally decide to meet in the exact same place in Wien in six months time. And the first movie ends here. (I think that one of the best parts of the movies is a fake phone conversation between the two main actors.)
The second movie, shows the second time this man and woman meet again...not six month after, but...9 years after in Paris, where she lives, by chance, or let's say almost by chance. Now, I will say no more because I would prefer that you see the two movies yourself. The second movie was shot also 9 year after the first one and it is impressive to see the signs of these 9 years written in the face on the two actors. But it made me wonder how some things are so different when seen from our early 20's and from our 30's. And how really we can only possibly regret the things that we did not do and the times when we were not daring enough. |
