The large building in the background is the old fire station (now closed) on London Road near Piccadilly -- a Metrolink tram passes on its way into Piccadilly train station -- the building behind the tram is Monroes Hotel -- photo taken 7 October 2006

The new entrance to the Arndale shopping centre on Market Street --

At the junction of Market Street, Cross Street and Corporation Street -- the new Marks & Spencer store is on the right. The triangular-shaped glass building in the background is No. 1 Deansgate, completed in 2003 it's an exclusive apartment complex -- photo taken 7 October 2006

Taken from New Cathedral Street looking towards St. Ann's Square --
the tall building back left is the Royal Exchange (formerly the Cotton Exchange) -- photo taken 7 October 2006

No, it's not the Sydney Opera House .... rebuilt in the 1950's and restored in 1998, Oxford Road train station has an unusual shape and construction, the front being made of timber -- it's built high on a railway arch and in a confined space -- opposite the Palace Theatre and the Palace Hotel, Oxford Road station is the closest to the University and serves destinations like Liverpool, Blackpool, Sheffield and Leeds -- some trains from the south to Piccadilly go through to Oxford Road too.

The lastest addition to the Manchester skyline and it's certainly big -- at 171 metres high with 48 floors Beetham Tower on Deansgate is Europe's tallest residential building although it's not all residential -- floors 5 to 23 are the Hilton Hotel, floor 24 has a 'sky bar' and from there to the top there are over 200 apartments.

In my photo a Metrolink tram passes the viaduct approaching the G-Mex stop -- photo taken 14 October 2006 from Great Bridgewater Street.

Another photo to show Beetham Tower as it dwarfs the old buildings on Deansgate -- photo taken 14 October 2006

This building on Great Ancoats Street may look new but it was actually built in 1939 -- known to Mancunians as the Daily Express building as that was what it was until 1989 -- it was converted to offices in 1993.

Hi Ben I love your Manchester Page. I live in Leeds but always visit Manchester if I want a change of the city scenery! Popping over next month for a day trip for the theatre and what takes my fancy. Best wishes, Dawn

Hi Ben. My husband and I (Yanks) are moving to the UK in the fall and we're considering Manchester. We want to rent a 2/3 bedroom house with a small garden near transport. Any neighborhood suggestions? Thanks.

I really like your page on Manchester. My boyfriend and I are moving from Leeds to Manchester in the next few weeks. I can confirm that despite the recent snow that it was in fact sunny in Manchester on Tuesday

Had a day in Manchester last week and YES it rained all day! It's still a great city though (I lived here for a while in the late 70's) and this is a great page. Cheers, John.
