Opaeka'a Falls - Kaua'i - 2006

Opaeka'a Falls - 2006
Opaeka'a Falls is located west off of Highway 56 on Highway 580. It's a very short drive from Highway 56. The best time to photograph this beautiful waterfall is between 10:30am - 11am. The lighting seems to be perfect at this time. The best opportunity for great viewing is on a nice day after a heavy rain. The heavier the recent rainfall, the more grand the waterfall!

Here's another shot of Opaeka'a Falls, which means "rolling shrimp" in Hawaiian. The name dates back to the time when hundreds of shrimp were seen rolling in the turbulent waters at the base of the falls.

Although it's only 40 feet high, its three shoots make Opaeka'a one of the most photographed on the island of Kaua'i.

Wailua Falls - August, 2006

Wailua Falls - Kaua'i's most famous waterfall

Ok...remember the intro to the T.V. show, "Fantasy Island?" Well, these are the famed falls that graced the intro with Tatoo shouting "da plane, da plane!" These falls are approximately 80 feet high and very easy to get to. There are three logical ways to visit Wailua Falls. You can drive there west on highway 583 off of highway 56...or, take a kayak up Wailua River...or, take a boat tour up the river. There are people who have ignored the warning signs and hiked to the top of the falls. I don't advise this...most people who have purposely or accidentally gone over the falls aren't around to tell about it. Stick to the beaten path on this one.
