Malham Cove and Goredale Scar

by mamawinnie - last update: Oct 3, 2006

Gobsmacking !

I love walking in England and especially around where I live.
Malham is about 30 miles away from me and has the most fantastic natural limestone cove.
You can walk from Malham and over the limestone pavement at the top right over to Gordale Scar.
Malham cove is a huge natural amphitheatre. The walls rise over 70 metres above the valley floor.
The cove was formed by erosion of the ice, glacial meltwater and underground water.
Ice age glaciers must have tumbled over the edge to form the great wide bowl at the base of the cove.

Mid Craven Fault

The view is dominated by the long escarpment of greatscar limestone leading from east to west.
During the Carboniferous period there was a major fracture in the earths crust.

Goredale Scar

The gorge owes its origin to erosion by the ice age meltwater.
The valley sides close in as you walk into it and above the water fall rises to 1 kilometre.

Oh, dear- that treacle! Keep at it girl. Ryan's shoes will be costing a fortune soon, if his feet grow like my boy's did. Size 15 now, but he's 6' 7"!!
