Buildings at Shaker Village

by Pawtuxet - last update: Sep 28, 2006

Entrance to the barn

a little garden in front of the old barn. Only the Shakers could design something so simple and have it appear so elegant. That's the beauty of their crafts as well.

The tour begins here

Our tour guide was quite knowledgeable...altho a bit long winded. He walked us through the cultural aspects of the Shakers' way of life and then guided us through several buildings on the site. He was obviously very enthusiastic about his work. It was intereting to learn about the Shaker "ways".

The Wood Shed

My husband was intrigued with the precision with which these caretakers had stacked the wood...much in the Shaker tradition.
Admissions and gallery

Tours available from here

Gallery and admissions center. Rest room facilities....brochures available.

Across the gardens

Some buildings were used for specific crafts or laundry...while others were reserved for bedrooms. There was a building for the women and one for the men...the group was celebate....which is why they eventually faded away with noone to carry on their works, religion, or way of life.
Christopher and Karen

Simplicity...clapboards....multi paned windows....

Museum store

The museum is full of shaker style gifts and soulvenirs. It's a beautiful building. We found the items they carry a bit pricey...but then all Shaker crafts are expensive. If you find an old original piece...the price of those would knock your socks off!

Hi Janet - Really enjoyed your pages on the Shaker Village. We visited the Hancock Shaker Village on the New England trip. It was fascinating! Will hopefully get those pics up soon.

So sweet here - the lake, the museum of houses, the charming info center, castel/mansion - just really good Americana! Lovely tour with such a nice feel. You did it again! Ciao bella, <(•¿•)>

Hey Davy Crockett- pardon my ignorance, but what is a whirly-gig? I could quite happily live in that Castle in the Clouds . Saw a doco recently on Shakers and their beautiful chairs. Nice page & pics.

That 'Castle in the Clouds' is certainly impressive, interesting that it's contemporary to our Iandra. What a marvellous setting for it too.
