Start off by cheating and train the Rigi Train. You can ride all the way to the summit for the view and then walk down to kaltbad (add another hour to the hike) We had done this bit earlier in the week so we got off at Kaltbad and headed for Scheidegg.

Take a detour off the gravel track - the old railway route - to Felsenweg, a beautiful path overlooking the Lake of Lucerne.

Back on the gravel path for a short while and the another detour for the lake views on the Seeweg path for which you have to climb up a little around the Dossen hill....another climb at the end too!

Don't head all the way to the Scheidegg cable car but head down to Burggeist. Pathway crosses meadows - pass friendly cows and farmsteads. wonderful views all the way as we follow the rim of the Rigi mountain and onwards towards Gaetterli.

At Soeren choose again the track to the left - along ridge of hill, crossing some patches of forest. and then a moderate descent through trees till finally reaching Chellensack and after 100m on the gravel arriving at a rest spot Gaetterli with its delightfiul restaurant

The track to Urmiberg is to the left, almost flat. After Rohrboden the road is ascending steadily and circumvents the rocky Rigi Hochfluh. If you wish to climb Rigi Hochfluh be warned, the track is very steep and the shoes should have a good grip. At Egg the sight opens to the South. For Gottertli choose the track right up the grass hill, or proceed on the road. At the turn off for Timpel it's the other short climb to Gottertli with a superb view.

The last part to Timpel and the Cable car station is at first rather flat, then there follows a steeper descent. The Restaurant right at the cable car station offers a fantastic view into the mountains of Central Switzerland and the Urnersee.
