A community effort!

Beachcomber beached

Out of its element!
There can be few objects so out of their element as a beached flying boat! In the background can be seen some of the huddle of people. The view is looking northwards up the lagoon - imagine how delightful that view would be on a sunny summer's day!
This almost looks a regular social event!

Tug-of-war time!

Gathered locals, with some aircrew and passengers, waiting for the order to pull the ropes to swing the aircraft around. It was quite impressive how everyone spontaneously began to work as a team to retrieve the situation and save the flying boat: quite a community effort.
Getting the beach set up

The heavy equipment comes in.

Earthmoving equipment arrives to provide assistance.
Wingtip in the beach sand.

That's not supposed to be there!

A very 'second hand' float

This float will have to be replaced.

In the circumstances it was very fortunate that the damage was essentially confined to a float and the aircraft's wingtip. In earlier years, other flying boats had been destroyed here by sudden changes in the weather.
Getting the damaged float out of the way.

The float is now clear, work goes on.

Once the damaged float could be removed, the process of moving the aircraft could continue. First though, it was necessary to drain fuel from the tanks in the wing (the hoses may not be visible due to the small photo size).

My photos of Lord Howe are of an island blanketed in mist as I cruised by on an overseas liner in the dim distant past. Not as adventurous as flying boats that get beached, that's for sure. Carole.

Another of your amazing destinations! Too bad to be working in such a location ! I know how frustrating it can be to be on assignment when others are at leisure … though that can be pleasant on some account!

Fantastic indeed ! What an adventure to get shipwrecked in this magic place, even in winter ! Oh, I also know and had Kentia palms, so that's where they are from :-) However... why do they have a golf court by now ? Visible on GE

That really looks lika small gem - I wonder how it is there, today. Your adventure with the waterplane was fun reading - stranded, huh? :-)
